How to kill a Ps3 Console
So how good is the console when put under extreme operating pressure and alternating environments The total concept of the Ps3 console instills robustness, stability and durability, the overall package combines the latest chip technology and peripheral advancements. The following results of the console are noteworthy reading and were done under the following guidelines. Results were recorded accurately to provide an actual operating statistic.
The following conditions were applied to each testing environment
• Continuous usuage of 108hours with no interruption to power supply
• Game of choice was Resistance Fall of Man & Motor Storm, Enchanted Arms
• Blu Ray movies – Several – around 10 different titles , Casino Royale, The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator 2, Superman Returns…
• Console was positioned on standalone timber unit with approximate 10cms of airflow under neath.
• Same 10 players were used over this period each playing or using the unit for a maximum of 1.5hours in any given session.
• Same controllers were used throughout the testing period
The following cycle was copied and used in each testing environment.
Start time Monday 9am –
2 hours blue ray dvd titles
4 hours continuous play on Resistance FOM
2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
2 x blue ray dvd movies
1 x blue ray dvd movie
1 x blue ray dvd movie
2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
6 hours of Motor Storm
6 hours of Resistance Fom
10 hours of Blue Ray Dvd 7 titles
1 hour of Motor Storm
3 hours of Resistance
5 hours of Enchanted Arms
2 hours blue ray dvd title
2 hours blue ray dvd title
5 hours Resistance FOM
5 hours Motor Storm
1 hour enchanted Arms
3 hours blue ray dvd titles
Repeated from the top until 108hours
Environment 1 Typical Family Room
Temperature 73 F
Console Ran continuous for the 108hours with only once incident happening at 12 hours in – a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported
Environment 2 Back of a Freezer Van – unit was placed inside the closed van with controllers and screen mounted outside, - no one was willing to sit in side the van for any extended period of time
Temperature Started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next 4 days to reach 0degrees.
Incidents We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.
108hours in and still working fine
Environment 3 Heat Sauna – again console inside and controllers and screen outside.
Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
Incidents Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.
This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine.
We believe the only way to kill a ps3 console is

Out of curiousity, was a new PS3 used in each test environment?
With the cold/freezer test environment, you could try leaving the PS3 to ’soak in’ at various temperatures for an hour or so (to allow the whole PS3 to be at the same temperature as stated on your thermostat) before switching it on and running it, just to see at what temperature it will start to function. This is different to your test environment because you had a PS3 running for a while as you drop the temperature down, which would then have some of its own generated heat to combat the temperature drop.
Also, another good test to do is a temperature/humidity cycle test. Alternate high and low temperature/humidity on an hourly basis to see how the console cope with constantly oscillating conditions. The continuous expansion/contraction due to the changing temperature might kill it.
Anyway, a comparison with an XBox360 and Wii would definitely be great!
I don’t think it is nessisary to test a Wii also because it is also a pretty reliable consle from what I hear but they do need to test a 360 and just show us what little it takes to kill it. Like 1 hour of gameplay
Yes 360’s burn out so fast, its sad. Wii’s im not so sure would stand it, but who knows….360 would probably fail the first test LOL…ive had them burnout and one even caught the local toy’s r us on fire LOL
360 will have broken within 10 minutes. A magazine report i read says 1500 to 2500 360s break and are sent for repair every week
the Wii should be tested especially with all these reports of the GPU getting overheat resulting in graphical glitches

Sami, you’re saying a sauna should be OVER 212 degrees F???!!! 100 degrees Celsius is 212 degrees Fahrenheit… that’s 4 degrees away from water boiling. I don’t think sauna’s are even allowed to be over 190 degrees Fahrenheit in the United States. 150-160 is the average sauna temperature.

Mitch,Xenom73, i dont want to start a fight but a sauna with only 110F is one GOD DAMN COLD sauna. at least for us here in finland we try to get the sauna atleas 70 or 80 celsius (150-180F), 100 celsius and over is mostly just for hardcore sauna master uber leet guys
or when there is some competitions, the winner always boils water or something in the sauna before coming out.

And I do believe this was just to test the PS3’s operating in different environments not for someone to enjoy a sauna. So 120F is pretty hot for a system already making its own heat to begin with. I’m just glad it passed the test, unlike the 360 that crap out at room temp…lol
This further prove PS3 is a reliable and techically robust console. Please put a 360 (preferably the Elite) to similar tests and see how short it lasts. I bet 2 hours max.

Typically a real sauna ( = a Finnish one) is something like 80-100 celsius which is 176-212 Fahrenheit, but 120 celsius (248 Fahrenheit) is common too. And no, it doesn’t kill you.
Wow, 108 hours! That’s absolutely amazing. The same test should be done with an Xbox 360 (One of the 360’s that doesn’t fall into the 30-50% failure rate). I’d be surprised if the 360 lasted more than 20 hours in any of those conditions.

It’s quite a good test. However, You should bare in mind that X360 is made by Microsoft( a US company) and PS3 is made by Sony( a Japanese company) and that explains everything I guess

50celsius is cold for a sauna. I don’t usually go into sauna if it is not well over 100celsius warm. Otherwise I get goosebumbs and I get cold, and that is annoying.

Sometimes, here in Finland, sauna may even be over 120 celsius.. My favourite kind actually. Theres nothing better than to heat up your sauna super hot and after some time you take a dip in a frozen lake (from a hole on the ice) or roll around in snow.. Then back to sauna.

Could you Finnish people please stop talking about how deliciously warm your saunas are. The sauna experiment was meant to test the PS3 at 100+ degrees Fahrenheit, and one of the easiest places to get that indoors is in a sauna. It was not meant to help the PS3 relax and relieve some of that muscle tension, otherwise I bet they would have turned it up a little.
LOL! put a point on the board for the ps3. yeah they should test the wii and xbox. oh and sami, most room temperatures aren’t even going to get up to 110 degrees so be happy that they pushed it past the normal room temperatures.
To be fair, I think you should test all 3 system. I suggest testing them at the same time and on all conditions. That would be interesting!

i love my ps3,no problems cept need up 2 date flash player so i can watch adult swim fix,xmb in game access,custom soundtracks maybe even video sharing that would be awesome but probible copywrite issues would be in question, screen saver should have multible pix option like the photo viewer, more printer device selections,i mean only epson come on! and ps store upgrades,more options and u can’t go wrong. there’s already alot but can never be too much u know. just want to max the supercomputer aspect of my ps3 so i can impress my x360 friends into spending 5-700 on a system that can’t be broken by conventional means.and that’s my opinion.peace.#1 in the hood G!!

my brother bought his 360 a year ago, we played for 12 hours straight co op gears of war without problems.
but either way, its irrelevant, because microsoft has ramped up the warranty for its systems, so even if your 360 does get the RROD, you’re still getting a replacement (for 3 years).
now, continuing on, it really doesn’t matter how long a ps3 can handle a stress test performed in a non-scientific way.
what matters to nearly everyone (given sales statistics) is the poor developer APIs that sony has handed out to third parties, the complete lack of need for an incorporated blu-ray player, and the fact that any GOOD games for the system won’t be coming out ’til 4Q 07 or 1/2Q 08.
that might explain why the ps3 was outsold by its predecessor (the ps2, in case some of you are [probably] too stupid to figure it out) by a ratio of 3:1.

after realizing that it had an abominable lineup of software, poor online utilities, and a bunk lineup of games (for the next year) he decided to scrap it and get a 360.
this is of no surprise to me, I have to PS2’s, the original one and the slim one… the original one, I’ve dropped more than 10 times from a height of about 3 feet and the only thing that has happened was that the cd tray wouldn’t come out but that was fixed once I opened it up.. I’ve left both of them (even the slim one which doesn’t have a fan) on with a game inside for more than 3 days with an estimated 15-20 hours of usage because I didn’t have a memory card at the time

all next gen/power pc based consoles are multi-core. the 360 has a multi-core processor (3 general purpose cpus vs 8 spus in the ps3).
what I think is funny is the gamespot comparison of game visuals on the 360 vs the ps3, where the 360 won in a majority of the games.
the problem is all in sony feeding people bullshit. anybody remember the claims of “supercomputer processing” and that ridiculous killzone 2 video being hailed as “realtime”?
then it turns out that the ps3 is barely able to catch up to the world’s SLOWEST supercomputers, and can’t even perform the claimed 1 TFLOP caculations that kutaragi has been throwing around. It’s actualy more in the range of 500-650 GFLOPs at best.
now the new screens of killzone 2 have come out, and I’m sure some of you will say “see?! it looks the same”. yeah, it looks the same, if you take into effect the decreased accuracy/complexity of lighting, closer draw in, fewer character models being used, etc. etc. etc. the fact of the matter is that the “realtime” bullshit sony claimed with the original killzone 2 teaser were absolutely, 100% false.
couple all of this with the abysmal proprietary devkit that sony has (versus the immensely popular and easy to use visual.net kits from ms) and you’re looking at.a ps3 that won’t achieve full potential ’til at least the 4th cycle of games. if sony continues their sales slump (which I fully expect them to do, as trends have shown) then the 4th generation of games won’t even matter.
more than likely, the ps3 will go the way of the atari jaguar or sega cd. the hardware architecture will simply be relegated to building cheap supercomputing rigs for universities and not for gaming.

Rob, what makes you think the PS3 bombed based on just the eight months its been out? I didn’t know the race was already over. Last time I checked, PS1 was supported for over 10 years. The PS2 is 7 years old and is still outselling the 360 on a monthly basis. The original Xbox’s support dried up after 4 years. Comeback here and watch us laugh at you when you’re on your third 360 wtih a losing format (HD DVD), and most of the killer franchises for the PS3 is out by next year. By 2009, then tell us who’s winning…

console wars are almost always determined by the launch and initial titles that follow. the ps3 was the last system to join the fray, had (read: still has) the least amount of games, the fewest exclusive titles, and the the second smallest amount of third party developers making games for it.
if by “most of the killer franchises” you mean mgs4, white knight, and ffxiii, then you might have a valid point. the problem is that a handful of flagship titles cannot save a system. the dreamcast had an immense lineup of classic games (groundbreaking titles like shenmue), but it didn’t matter.
most of the former exclusives for the ps3 have switched over. devil may cry 4 is no longer a ps3 exclusive, and neither is assassins creed.
the problem for sony is that microsoft has more resources, more units out on the market (sony has sold 4.2 million units vs the 11 million units of the 360), more third party support, better online support (as pretty as home looks, xbox live is simply more user friendly and functional), better developer APIs, etc. etc. etc.
now, I fully believe that the original xbox was garbage. I had more fond memories on my ps1 and ps2 than I’ve had with most systems, but sony blundered big time with the ps3, lying about its graphical capabilities, overestimating demand, and thinking that most people would shell out that much money for a system that had one good game at launch (resistance).
the ps3, in all (very high) probability, will fail.

Yes shitbot, but how many ps3’s were avalable on launch? I am 100% positive that EVERY SINGLE ONE LD OUT! And they continued to be n high demand for a good time after that. At the end of 07 PS3 will be far ahead of the 360 after good game realeases like Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk, and Drakes Fortune.
Just got one thing to say after all the amusing console slating. Gran Turismo 5. Yeah I know all about Forza 2, not a bad game by any means, but watch out for GT5 in 1080p. Had a 360 and it endured many many many continous hours of playing, as anyone whos played Oblivion will understand. Then RROD and in the skip it went! Long Live Sony!!!!!

you fanboys fail to understand that most companies don’t want to develop for the ps3 because it has a shitty devkit. it’s an abysmal platform to code for. the 360 on the other hand, is simple because of the MS devkits that are used (which are notorious for being user friendly).
last but not least, I’ve never been a fan of the GT series because they are absolutely lifeless simulators, not games. games are fun. the gt series is like taking fantasy football and putting it into a car sim for people with OCD. it is probably one of the most stale “games” to ever come out for a console, no matter how in depth it is.

Same goes for the PS3, there are alot of hardcore sony fans that will buy anything that Sony produces and then there are also people like me who write and choose from experience. Yeah the price is high, which is why they are not selling as much, but no other console come with a BD player IN-BUILT! The stand alone units cost 3-400, so a next gen console on top for 100 more seems like a good deal to me. FREE on-line play, not subscription based makes the ps3 easier to start with multi-player gaming, against a well established but dated XBL. I’m not being biased out of spite like you seem to be, I had 2 360’s and I have a Wii, but the PS3 is THE serious console I would gladly bet my life savings on. The days of the 360 are not numbered like people suggest, just wait and watch Sony trample ahead in its huge boots, this christmas will be the moment.

in case you haven’t figured out this one either, free online play doesn’t mean moot. WoW players are still coughing up dough after all these years just to play that stupid game, and people have been doing the same for xbox live (which is immensely more popular than the ps3s online service). hell, nintendo just recently announced that they’d sold 4.7 million virtual console games. that’s 4.7 million OLD games sold for the wii.
people will pay for things that often should be free. yes, I like the free online component of the ps3, but the fact of the matter is that it’s still not as popular as the subscription based service that microsoft has to offer. ps3’s online store doesn’t have 1/10 of the content that the 360 does, and sony is losing tons on hardware costs alone.
in terms of system profitability, the wii is in first, 360 is in second, and the ps3 is in last.

The fact that the temperatures were altered during the test means that the results aren’t as accurate than they could be. Playing for 108 hours in 0F is quite a ways different than playing 108 hours in temperatures ranging from 50F to 0F. There’s no way for us to tell how long the system stayed in various temperature ranges. Likewise, for the sauna experiment, it should have been left in 140-150 degree rooms with no variation.

hi all , jus like to say i fought i was going to have to buy another ps3 yesterday , i got a new HDTV and had to take my old “30 something inch tv out , i got into a mess and sadly the tv dropped , corner first straight on to my ps3, and yet it still works perfectly well ! id like to see an X-Box 360 still survive a tv being dropped onto it , just goes to show the ps3 will take a beating lol

Never had any problems with it. Guess what other console was as durable as the PS3. Dreamcast. I used to leave mine on for days at a time and it ran fine. Plus it got pulled off its high shelf onto the floor (5 foot drop about) all the time, and not only did it break, it would still be running fine. Just because it’s durable doesn’t mean it will be a successful console. I doubt most people will ever know or care that their console can run at 0 degrees or 120 degrees.
i dunno bout everyone, but i trust the sony brand. Ever since ps1 days i will never leave my console gaming to any other franchise. Durability, great titles…what else is required.
Btw…an xbox360 dealer advised me not to buy a 360 because it’s durability is pitiful. This comes from an extremely qualified console technician. Some are lucky to have their 360 without issues, but then i guess thats why is 8 out of 10 and not 10 out of 10 consoles returned isnt it?.

I have the PS3, Elite, and Wii. I thought the PS3 would just crush the 360 but it hasn’t. The Wii is a toy and shouldn’t be sold with real game consoles, it is fun though. The 360 owns online and has the games because of it’s headstart. The PS3 is quieter and better built but I am worried about it’s future. I have had every game console since Intellivision, for the young ones that was about 30 years ago. I have seen this before, it’s public opinion that seals a consoles fate. If the majority wants the Console to win then it does no matter if it’s better or not. Right now the 360 is the center of the game universe.
I want the PS3 to win. I like quality to come out on top but I am just not sure this time.

The Wii is hot, it may be the invention of the decade. My son loves it, he plays the heck out of it and he is only 3. Nintendo saved there butts with that console and I am glad to see it. Outselling Sony- great, passing the 360- Priceless.
The PS3 is definitely the best console for your money. It is a PlayStation game player, a Blue Ray player, and you can even load an OS onto it, and use it for a render horse for video/3D/audio/any other rendering needs. I have a friend that I go to school with, and he compared the PS3 to the most “comparable” Render Horse that is out right now, and he told me that the Renderer, that operates and performs at the same quality, in close to $2,000. If you do any 3d animations, you will know that rendering is the most painful part of the process, and the playstation can triple your render time, compared to just using you pc’s processor.

I bought my ps3 last week (80Gb Version) and yesterday it started to hang while I play. I tested it 13 times and it always hang.
This afternoon I brought it back to the local retailer store here in the Philippines. We tested it for 2 hours hoping the problem will show again. The ps3 is working without fail during those test and we had taken it again for testing at home.
The difference on my home and the store is their operating environment. At store the environment is around 20-29 degrees celsius. Here at home the temperature is around 32-35 degrees celsius while playing the temperature rise up to 39 degrees. The room here at home doesn’t have opened windows to begin with.
Now, the ps3 is working fine. I just opened a window and put an eletric fan facing the ps3 and the back facing the opened window.
I hope they will do this test again on 80Gb models. As these models together with 40Gb have few modification on the hardware parts as to lessen the manufacturing cost per box.

Meanwhile, Sony is going to be showing off a prototype Cell-based computing board incorporating an RSX graphics processor, developed with Nvidia, at the Siggraph in the next few day.
The addition of the GPU is supposed to push arithmetic speeds beyond the 230 GFLOPS capability of the Cell processor alone. Sony’s going to demo it running 4K images with four times the resolution of HDTV.

Ahh… the most useless test ever. While mayhap it be that some consoles are prone to failure (360) the actual worth of this test is useless. Put it this way. Electronics are SUPPOSED to be made to endure what they ACTUALLY ARE MADE TO DO. It is unfortunate that the 360 has such high failure rates ( not knowing the exact number ill quote 33% ) at about 33% which is a blunder in itself. So the ps3 is better equipped than a faulty console eh?
Here`s a real test you can do. Run a PC (standard one for nowadays price match with the PS3 supposedly) and run a PS3 at the same time. See which one dies first. I`ll give you a few months before one goes out (rough estimate).
See what you`ve really done here is make up a bunch of bull on the PS3 superior quality of build. Yet these are electronics my friend subjected to quality tests that require them to be on and off for hours and hours and hours. I`ve ran multiple PCs continuously for months on end before ever restarting (don`t try this as a result of me :D) and as it should as all things going out into market should be under some sorta guarantee that its not a cheap POS outta the box.
Next time you make a test … please dont make something as dumb as… can the PS3 play every DVD out there! Or can the PS run with the internet on continously! Honestly, these machines are built to do that. If you want some real tests and real data please do attempt to cross reference this stuff with some controls (im talking statistically here). Heres a good idea for your next one. Of the 3 following DVD enabled devices PS3, (name two of your choice… maybe 360) Which can play almost all DVDs. Maybe go a lil more extravagant and rate them on levels of scratched-up-ness or poorly burnt. When you get those results maybe you`ll DESERVE some recognition.

And while some of your comments are valid, the reason this test was done was to prove that the PS3 did act the way it was supposed to and would do so in extreme conditions well beyond what anybody living in neither an igloo or an oven would endure. My 360 died after watching a DVD. That’s what it was designed to do and it failed. No further tests necessary. As for the Wii, given it’s chip set is not at the level of the 360 or PS3, it was not included.
Keep the comments coming but please recognize this test for what it was. And no, Sony had nothing to do with this test.

Personally, I’d leave that up to the actual engineers of the consoles who (in most cases) run these consoles through tests that go beyond imagination such as if you were to put in a DVD and then reset the console 200 times over would the console still work? Would the console work if it were supporting 100 + lbs? Strangely enough these are the tests that engineers might go through.
As for what I really think… mmm :D. I think you’ve proven the point that the engineers know how to do their job and I’m sure a lot of people got a kick outta it. But if you really wanna entertain people try getting the PS3 run over by a truck and see if it still works LOL. There’s been a story that that happened to a 360 and it worked fine.

Bottom line, this test was designed to show that the PS3 held up under extreme playing conditions as compared to the well publicized Red Ring of Death that 360’s got when you so much as looked askew at them. Having had a 360 die under less than stressful conditions, I can tell you, it does happen.
And yes, our test was nothing more than what the engineers should have done and hopefully did do. And just like the gentleman above whose PS3 in the Phillipines didn’t work in a humid environment and the 360 that survived a truck runover, there will always be models that go either above and beyond or way, way below. Had I infinite $$, I would test 100 of the things and perform the truck runover test. But I don’t so we’ll just have to be satisfied with the tests already done. That is unless somebody wants to offer up their PS3 for me…yeah right :).

What a test. Well impressed! Ive had my PS3 since April last year and had no problems what so ever. My mate had a 360 at xmas and after 2 hours of play the RROD came… what a f**kin joke, brilliant start!!

Not sure, but out of my Wii, PS3 and 360Elite, the only one that has died was the PS3…and only after 2 months of minimal usage. I sent it back and it was replaced with a unit that lasted a grand total of 5 minutes.
I do like my PS3 quite a bit and I do know of the issues with the 360, but all of the hype regarding the ‘longevity’ of the PS3 is getting old when I have one working in a normal environment (open air) with minimal stress and it choked itself to death.

Well considering the xmb is mostly stored on the internal hdd and without the xmb you pretty much dont have a system to work with… which is why the ps3 comes with a drive standard in the first place… the 360 sells one sku without a hard drive so it was designed to run without a hdd

IF any of you would look at the other reports about the 360s is that its only the first generation. The larger cores (90nm) had severe issues with thermal expansion and would break solder joints on the pcb. The thermal expansion rate greatly exceeded the rate of the substrates and would literally pull the joints apart. Which is why the towel trick worked for some people to fix it. They would basically cook the unit til it got hot enough to rebond the solder joint. Trust me, an unventilated cpu and gpu will get hot enough to deliver a 3rd degree burn instantly and almost flash boil water.
The elites were the start of the second and soon to follow 3rd gen 360s. So they weren’t that best at the beginning but microsoft caught up, somewhat.
ive got both the xbox and ps3 and to be fair the xbox pisses all over the ps3 for online gaming. how can anyone put up with the lag on the ps3. ive got up to 20 mbps connection and my xbox works great online but the ps3 is shambolic just cos its free dont mean its got to be naff, ok xboxlive had its share of problems over xmas and it was delt with within a few weeks and we got a free acade game. i had xbox since the week it came out, i got the red rings 11 months after so i got on the phone to microsoft and i got a new xbox 10 days later with a retail game a month xboxlive card and a new warranty and touch wood its still alive, where are all these decent exlusive games sony promised us? xboxs games have been rocking on the exlusive front and the cross platform games are selling 3 times as many on the xbox. i wonder if sony will ever catch up.
Hey Vince, i have both two, and the number of games on the xbox is around 25 against 2 on the playstation 3. I used to play ps 1 and 2 before this. The good games are coming way too late in my opinion. Also i prefer xbox live above the ps network. But then again i would kill for my xbox to shut up and be as quiet as the ps3, so i guess eventually the ps3 will start gaining on the xbox 360 as to games in my closet.

1 month ago i got my ps3 update in and started playiing online motor storm 4 6 days later y was playing sony and in thegame play the image frozed i could not turn it off anyway so y used the backside switch when i turned it on again the ps3could not read the game it just showed the loading sign i the upper right side and did not run the game i returned it to the store and tey gave me a new one and 1 week ago a started playng online resistane FOM y was also playing the game story 2 days ago i played 3 HOURS turned it off t eat when i was going to play again in showed the blue ray disc but not the image of the game pressed X and it said an error have occured i tryied taking the game and ‘putting it back in and DID NOT WORKED NOW I HAVE THE SAME DAMN PROBLEM IT DOESNT READ ANYTHING PLEASE IF SOMEONE KNOWS A WAY TO FIX IT POST IT

Somehow I think if these tests were applied to the other competing consoles they would not last nearly as long, especially the xBox 360 it probably wouldn’t last over 3 hours. What Ps3 vault should do is repeat all of the tests with Xbox 360 & Wii and see how long they will last before they do crash. I have my money on the first to crash: Xbox 360.

The fact that PS3 sales are increasing tremendously, while the only tremendously increasing figures for the xbox 360 are the return rate and the amount of $$$ MS is losing on warrenties (Of course all consoles have their problems, ps3 included, but thats xbox is just outrageous…33%! cmon!).
I’m hardly a fanboy, though I’ll admit I’m bias in favor of the PS, but to me, PS3 just needed time, and games, and with the upcoming MGS4, its going to get a giant boost.
MS is starting to fail, it started with the 360…then Vista…what next? They’re starting to lose it….
I currently have a broken PS3 right now, it has not video output. I’ve done the trick to reset the video settings by holding down the power button. Nothing I have done works, and from what I’ve read this is an increasingly common problem. My launch 360 still works and still has the best games IMO. By the time the PS3 gets any good games, the next generation of the XBOX will be on the horizon.

My PS3, purchased Dec 21 2006, just pooched. The cooling fan barely works and the gpu overheats. It still works, but I have to run it without its shell and with a muffin-fan in place of the original (looks sad). I own all of the current and last-gen consoles, and was really suprised when the PS3 died first (less than 100hrs on it), my money woulda’ been on the 360. I’m not interested in sending it to Sony in trade for a refurb so water-cooling is in the works unless anyone’s got a schematic for the fan controls on a 60gb PS3.
That test system sounds pretty cool. I wish Sony made one like that for EVERYONE. yeah you probably tested a top notched unit. But the 40gb??? Just insert a game and see what happens to the laser diode?
I had my console for a month, took great care of it, constantly dusted the thing (just to prove my point). i played it in a room with open ventilation and did not leave the console in a tight constricted area. If you want to so a real test, test a whole range of consoles not one thats built for extremes like MOST of the earlier models were.

I sent my console Jan 18 08..it is now April 1 08 and i haven’t got it back!!! Its been misplaced, i get so many promises..and i KNOW they’re lying just to keep me shut. I don’t get any valid notification whatsoever..just random emails now and then which mean nothing towards my situation.
bull my ps3 went down. i was in a chat rm wit friends came out and i had no disc to choose.would not load anygame. had no problems wit any game and ive been playin cod4 forever long amounts of time.then rainbow 6 two came out had nuttin but problems online or in terrist hunt played dat game for less than 2 wks and system crashed.then i tried a blu-ray movie it worked one time after that no blu-ray movie could b detected same wit games but games went 1st.

Alot of us are admiting we do not need the blu ray player at the moment when we really do. i hope everone know this but xbox360 is an ok sytem for what it represents a few game series and countless games that suck ass (excluding gow). xbox rushed came out a year earlier than ps3 which amounts to more games der. O yeah and i dont know if anyone know this but part of the reson xbox is selling so many console is the fact that it has such a high failure rate people just buy more or get a back up so if one fails “hey look i think im going to take the one out of my closet!”. PS3 IS 5% behind in sales of the xbox360 and wii is behind. only reason wii and xbox360 had more sales is because Wii made all ten year olds around the world pee their pance crying to get it. And xbox came out earlier with a cheaper price which incuded the 3rod. Honestly though PS3 is truely next gen bcus hddvds were out 3years earlier than when the xbox360 was released and blueray in japan only 1year before ps3 was released. blueray is the future its just developeers were to lazy to adjust their progamming skills to blueray so they decided to stick with the more than crappy HD DVDS!!!

The Wii is hot, it may be the invention of the decade. My son loves it, he plays the heck out of it and he is only 3. Nintendo saved there butts with that console and I am glad to see it. Outselling Sony- great, passing the 360- Priceless.
Somehow I managed to kill my ps3 just by playing GTA4 on and off for two weeks ( bought the european GTA4/PS3 bundle ). Haven’t done anything else to it, really.

The only way a PS3 can die on you is (1) you literally smash it apart as in the picture above (2) drop it in water/furnace and (3) the wires and stuff got messed up during production assembly which is 0.0009% of the time. Overall, Sony is a great company with a reliable console with new innovations.
What a bunch of !@*#&$. You can’t kill a PS3 because they DIE ON THEIR OWN. I bought mine on 10/07 and I’ll be on my third PS3 once I get my box from Sony to ship their junk back for the second time, for the same problem, CD/DVD drive doesn’t work. The thing is, there are massive amounts of people on their 2nd PS3’s with this same and other problem’s. After my 1 year warranty is up on 10/08, SONY said if it happens again I will be paying for the fix myself, what a bunch of !@@#!$%#. Anyone’s post trumpeting PS3’s durability is a joke. Save yourself from a headache and from throwing money in the trash becasue that’s what you’ll be doing and that’s just what the PS3 is, trash.

the new xbox 360’s never burn out. i had mine since the release date. i play 4-7 hours of gameplay (2-4 on weekdays) and it has never burned out. i have also had it on overnight with my tv turned off. it is the upperhand console for shure. i dont care bout graphics. 360’s are brighter and sharper but ps3’s are slightly smoother play. those kinda cancel eachother out. but i would rather have an xbox 360 of a ps3 anyday. you guys are fucking ps3 fanboys. i do have a ps3 (or did) because i left it on overnjight by accident… the blu ray lazer is permanantly busted. it will take 3-7 weeks for shipping instead of the 1-2 weeks for the xbox 360. (i broke a controller and sent it back)
Just a thought you should work on, the 360 is built by MS its built for pure gaming reflex and jump in compatibility + its MS all the faults of the 360 are most likely on purpose, the new 360 elite i bought and accidently left it running for 3 days got locked up like nothing happened at all in fact if anything messed up it was my tv piece of shit RCA it is ive only had ONE rrod and thats cause i got into a fight and fell on my xbox and apparently crushed 3/4 of the fan which then on burned out in like 2 minutes gameplay until it just fried completly.
ON the other hand PS3-sony known for it’s pure next-gen hardware and reliability, ps3 is COMPLETLY unreliable the foundation of the system is perfect by default but 1 screwup with any part of it = death
not to mention the fact that you can obliterate your cd drive by having it next to a tv for medium-entire periods of time, LOL it makes me laugh even if its not on just plugged in it screws up like a bitch.

i would say 360 before anyone says ‘fanboy’ i am not a fanboy i’ve owned both of these with not even remotly complainable problems. the 360 offer’s alot more exclusive DLC alot more intensive gaming . . . alot more people online and just mind blowing support.
after reading my own post i realize it’s weird….i know all about problems and shit people complain about cause like everybody either hangs out at the mall all fucking day long or owns one of these lol…
if the x-box 360 went in the sauna i would give it about an hour before the red eye of doom comes on lol
OK guys, i got a little glitch in my PS3.
When i´m playing Bad Company online mode
and i exit from the game it sais, please wait, then it gets stuck for some seconds
and it double makes the same sound that it makes when you turn it on and just restarts. it´s not really a problem it´s just some glitch or something because i can do all the other stuff with no problems, it never freezes also.

ok so 360 thinks their machine is better because of games. this is entirely opinion based and should not be used to sustain such an argument. i sold all my 360 games except for dead rising and dead or alive 4 and the rest were paintball shooters. thats my opinion.
