How to Kill a PS3 Console - is it Really Possible?
So how good is the console when put under extreme operating pressure and alternating environments? The Ps3 console suggests robustness, stability and durability, whilst the gooey tech inside combines the latest chip technology and peripheral advancements. The following results are noteworthy reading and were done under the following guidelines. Results were recorded accurately to provide an actual operating statistic.
The following conditions were applied to each testing environment
- Continuous usuage of 108hours with no interruption to power supply.
- Games of choice was Resistance Fall of Man, MotorStorm and Enchanted Arms.
- Blu-ray movies; around 10 different titles, including Casino Royale, The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator 2, Superman Returns...
- Console was positioned on standalone timber unit with approximate 10cms of airflow underneath.
- Same 10 players were used over this period each playing or using the unit for a maximum of 1.5hours in any given session.
- Same controllers were used throughout the testing period.
The following cycle was copied and used in each testing environment
- Start time Monday 9am.
- 2 hours blu-ray dvd titles.
- 4 hours continuous play on Resistance FOM.
- 2 hours continuous play on MotorStorm.
- 2x blu-ray dvd movies.
- 1x blu-ray dvd movie.
- 1x blu-ray dvd movie.
- 2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm.
- 6 hours of MotorStorm.
- 6 hours of Resistance FoM.
- 10 hours of blu-ray Dvd 7 titles.
- 1 hour of MotorStorm.
- 3 hours of Resistance FoM.
- 5 hours of Enchanted Arms.
- 2 hours blu-ray dvd title.
- 2 hours blu-ray dvd title.
- 5 hours Resistance FoM.
- 5 hours MotorStorm.
- 1 hour enchanted Arms.
- 3 hours blu-ray dvd titles
- Repeated from the top until 108hours.
Environment 1 Typical Family Room
Temperature 73 F
Console Ran continuous for the 108hours with only once incident happening at 12 hours in; a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported.
Environment 2 Back of a Freezer Van
Unit was placed inside the closed van with controllers and screen mounted outside - no one was willing to sit in side the van for any extended period of time.
Temperature Started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next 4 days to reach 0 degrees.
Incidents: We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen. 108hours in and still working fine.
Environment 3 Heat Sauna
Again, console inside and controllers and screen outside. Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
Incidents: Strangely enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, but to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64 hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come through with flying colours.
This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine. So you want to know how to kill a PS3?

Hi can someone please tell me the highest temperature (in Fahrenheit) of a ps3 fat i think 40 gig model.......umm when its at the highest temp or when you play it fr 2 hrs or 1 hr or just tell me the highest it goes to???
My PS3 has decided to play with my mind and refuses to stay on.
After I press the power on it shows GREEN and then within seconds turns off.
I've asked a friend who also has a PS3 but we are both stumped.
If I had a clue why I would try to fix it myself.

i own a ps3 but i live with someone who owns a 360, before i got a ps3, i had to buy games for his 360. i would have to say between the 2, the graphics aren't different much. i play on sd but ive played on hd plenty too with both consoles. 360 is more shallow in its technology experiance. i think its just meant for people trying to play games and just about that. you can do so much on the ps3, its unbelievable. the console goes very deep in its options. between my java based media server(ps3 media server), metal gear solid 4, wireless use, and yes, reliability, you can't compare. ps3 is in a class of its own. in my opinion, the controller is way nicer too. btw, ive seen so many people have problems with their 360. ever have to karate chop a console to get the tray to open or put a blanket or towel over a console to get it to play decent for another week or so? i'm not downing the 360, its quite a bit of entertainment, but between the 2, i choose the ps3 by far. it's kinda like comparing a white ford focus to a jet black cadillac cts.

Alot of us are admiting we do not need the blu ray player at the moment when we really do. All of our games are on blu ray disc. and don't anyone dare say it's a waste, it is because of this that Metal Gear is Only for the PS3, the only damn system it can fit on. you xbox 360 fans with , with out a doubt, feel stupid when the PS3 gets its place on top
I'm sorry to tell you kinect has games way better than your play station 3 coming your way including in a new army game VOICE COMMANDS! HaHa, where have I seen this on your Playstation... nowhere! HA! Forza 4 comes with.. exclusive coloring with kinect, an actual driving feeling included (when difficulty set to highest). Star Wars KINECT! Wield a virtual lightsaber using your BARE HANDS! HAHA! Somehow I managed to kill my ps3 just by playing GTA4 on and off for two weeks ( bought the european GTA4/PS3 bundle ). Haven’t done anything else to it, really.

I agree with the people wanting to test the 360, all you need is a 360 and then tap on it with your finger while the disk is running.
Not saying either one is better or worse just pointing that little bit out. i have a ps3 and 360 so no bias here.

Just so you know, the 360 is a lot better since the latest revision, i know a few people going close to 130hours of halo 2 because they are still playing on xbox live 6 days after the shutdown. lol

Jonathan Bowden i'm sorry, but the xbox graphics are not better, that's logically impossible. The PS3's Nvidia RSX(Reality Synthesizer) is a very very powerful card. Capable of performing insane 3D effects. Xbox has an ATI card that doesn't compare. You probably saw the xbox being played on a higher quality TV and was convinced.
I've had my 80G since May 2008. For the first year or so, the machine was used maybe 4-5 hours per day, but within the last 3 months or so, it has been used 9-11 hours per day, usually at 2-4 hours at a time.
My machine has been pulled off a shelf (3 feet high) while running (dog caught the charging cord whilst charging), I simply picked the machine up and kept playing (was playing MGS4 at the time), with no damage to disc.
I live in a farm house, which you could imagine can get quite dusty in summer and still no failures.
My co-workers are all Xbox fans and many times they would come into work saying how they got the RROD for the 8th time in as many months. Their excuse was that they used their system for 12 hours a day (multiple kids will do that) which is why they go through so many Xbox consoles. I say hogwash.
M$ is by far a less reliable system. Come on, what companies extend their warrenties by 2 years? They know they built a horrible product. M$ does beat PS3 in a few areas, I think. Graphics I find are better, online is better (although they pay for getting dropped) and there is many more game titles to chose from.
All in all I am very pleased with Sony PS, after still owning a PS1,PS2,PS3 I can say that all 3 work just fine and I still hook up the PS1 for some Medal Of Honour Underground fun, 12 years later.
Further jab at M$. I have a good buddy who works for Mircosoft and they won't even buy a Xbox. He's all pro-Xbox at work, but when he gets home he secretly turns his PS3 for hours of gaming enjoyment. :)
