According to Sam Kennedy of 1up.com, PS3 exclusive game Warhawk will be available through download only. The sequel to the original game on PS1 was shown at last year?s E3. The game added tilt function via SIXAXIS and 32 players online combat. As with any sequel on next generation game, it was to come with improved graphic as well as more realistic physics. However, the game development ran into some problems according to 1up.com. I?m not sure whether the problems directly contributed to game becoming direct download only or that the download only is part of the design. Nevertheless, the game will now be multiplayer oriented and available only through download on PlayStation Network.

Kennedy nailed it right on the head when he said that there is a negative perception on ?downloadable? games compared to full retail games. The gamers, including myself, have this perception because of Nintendo?s VC and Xbox?s downloadable content. On Nintendo?s case, they only offer retro game at this time. Microsoft has concentrated on simple arcade type of games. With hard drives in the Xbox 360 and PS3, I don?t see why fully developed games can?t be distributed via downloads. Valve has successfully implemented Steam to distribute their games without going through the conventional retail route. Steam has also opened up opportunities for smaller developers to showcase their games. Now, I don?t think we will do away with buying games at Bestbuy or Circuit City. However, I think we will see more and more quality games available through downloads for PS3.
