Upgrade PS3 Hard Drive for Cheap!
That’s right, and Sony even encourages it!
Unlike our “friends” in Redmond who treat XBox owners who upgrade the hard drive the way Britney Spears treats a math book, Sony encourages it’s users to upgrade their hard drives in the PS3.
In a recent blog post, Sony’s Jeff Rubenstein talks about how easy it can be to fill up an 80GB hard drive with all of the media and files available to Sony users. Add in an OS like Linux to the mix and your hard drive is full faster than Lindasy Lohan can say “Another vodka please!”. As for the upgrade process, he even links to a CNET Tutorial which tells you exactly how to do it.
As an aside, he mentions that the kind of hard drive used in the PS3 maxes out at 250 GB so if you want to go beyod that to make room for all of those Hanna Montana MP3s, you can purchase an external USB hard drive to your Achy Breaky Heart’s content.

(Editor: Hey Bunty, no worries, upgrading your PS3 is entirely optional and you won’t get a Michael Jackson face. Not sure about the Hillary Duff or Madonna comments but my celeberty comments were entirely tongue in cheek / sarcastic. Good luck with your PS3 and thanks for visiting and commenting!)
It’s a good idea. I personally don’t really need the extra space, as I don’t really have a need to put another OS on it, and all I really have are settings, saved games, music, and pictures.
But for those who need it, at least Sony supports it!
LOL @ the celebrity jokes
Malcom, thank you, thank you very much. I’ll be here all week at 7 and 9:30 with discount shows on Sunday afternoon. Don’t forget to tip your waitresses
Editor whats wroung upgrading your mind haha
Just as I was getting ready to upgrade to a 250GB hard drive, the online vendors started to carry PS3 compatible hard drive as low as $180. Hanna Montana, here I come!
I think that you have to make sure that its a SATA hard-drive to be compatable with the PS3. There are some fairly cheap ones on Amazon.com. Im just wondering about installing Linux on mine but what are the pros and cons (if any). Any one have any advice?
Thanks for the advice in advance
