The Agency: No Monthly Fees, Ads Instead

In a recent interview, Sony Online Entertainment Kevin O’Hara cleared the air and said the upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online game The Agency will not use a traditional monthly fee model but will instead rely on in game advertising and micro-transactions.

“We’re acutely aware that shooter players are not used to paying monthly fees, so I doubt we’ll go for an outright $15 a month, which works on some of our other projects. So we’re checking out Free Realms to see how they’re going to do with their micro-transactions, and we might incorporate some of that. We’ll definitely have some ad revenue models. The Agency’s the perfect place for some in-game product placement,” O’Hara said in the interview.

What do you think of in game ads? Would you rather see a monthly fee? Or a choice – no ads + fee or play free with ads? Let us know your thoughts below.

  1. I’m all for the ads, so long as they don’t interfere with actual gameplay. The world is full of advertising anyway – so a few coke machines / sony tv’s / Dell billboards will only make the game more immersive.

  2. tHIS GAME LOOKS VERY GOOD, AND WAS PLANNING ON PICKING IT UP, THAT IS UNTIL I HEARD IT WAS GOING TO BE MONTHKLY PAYMENTS TO PLAY… IF PUTTING ADS IN THE GAME WILL MAKE THE FEE DISAPEAR IM ALL FOR IT…….

  3. I have played just about any Free and Pay for MMO that has ever been created, well atleast when I was old enough to play. I find it actually fun when you see a brand you know in real life in a game, it seems to make it more in-depth and truly realistic, like blowing the shit out of a coke machine, because in real life it just scammed your dollar. Anyway, I don’t mind micro-payments, but I personally would prefer no Monthly Fee if it can be prevented, but I REALLY do suggest to the developers that making a “premium members” option for those who pay is stupid, worthless, and pisses anybody who’s not one off.
