Splinter Cell Conviction producer: “PS3 can’t handle AI nearly as well as the 360″

A developer from Ubisoft, you know, the same people that said Naruto for the 360 can only be done on the 360, have let another one loose. However this time, the wii gets a piece of the action.

In a recent interview with Gameplayer.com.au, Splinter Cell Conviction producer and technical director Dany Lepage had this to say.

“It’s NEVER gonna come out on the PS3 or the Wii.” It’s a logical decision. Nintendo’s console simply doesn’t have the graphical horsepower, and he candidly told Gameplayer.com.au how the PS3 can’t handle AI nearly as well as the 360.

  1. UH…Cant handle AI. The PS3 is helping to cure diseases! UbiSoft…I think not. More like Stupisoft!

  2. This is rubbish… the programmers from Ubisoft should learn to code, that’s it! They are a bunch of broken arms… seriously…

  3. I own both a 360 and PS3 (alot of us do) and will not buy any game with the Ubisoft name on it. The games they put out can not be very good if they dont’t learn to program. Sorry Ubisoft

  4. Ubisoft = horse shit.

  5. tough week for ps3

  6. Why tough week? Because some people can’t do parallel programming and one game won’t be published?

    Heres the real deal:

    1) Ubisoft don’t have the right skilled programmers to handle the complexity of the PS3

    2) It is not worth their time for the PS3 since there are not that many sales of Ubisoft titles that will result from it. (Take your pick as why – either Ubisoft is pathetic or there are not that many PS3 Consoles to justify development costs (unlikely).

    3) They are trying to promise XBox since the programmers their prefer it and by releasing disparaging remarks they aim to push xbox sales.

    4) They are trying to help Microsoft since every XBox will go belly up at one point during its life and give the users the red ring of death.

    5) They are biogoted Americans and hate Japanese (aka Sony).

    6) Most likely – they just can’t grasp the capabilities of the PS3 and how to fully utilize it without learning new skills – and they don’t want to learn new skills.

  7. I think it is funny how non-programming fanboys get mad when an educated programmer says something that is true about how the PS3 is an inferior game system. For movies it is great! Sony was focused on the more on the Blu-ray trojan from day one, the gaming side cleary suffers from a lack of attention.

EVERYBODY who knows a little something about tech, knows that the Cell Processor is great for Entertainment (video playback, music, etc.) purposes, but not for gaming.

Question: Where is the Cell in the PC gaming world??? Why do I see Xbox360 types of setups in the PC world??? Because it is better for Games!!! Sony F-ed up, face it. You F-ed up! Have fun with your 30fps games and crappy AI.

    Idiots.

  8. Ubisoft has no f**king clue how to program AI if they think the PS3-of all next gen systems-cannot handle ANY AI programming. Insomniac (developer of R:FOM) should teach them how a real AI program works!

  9. I think it is funny how non-programming xbox fans think that every comment from others are from non-programmers rather than educated folks with Master degrees who has done parallel programming for years on many different systems and including simulators for the U.S. military that blows away anything available commercially.

It is also funny how PS3s are doing AI tasks like driving SUVs (Linux-powered PS3 helps pilot autonomous SUV : http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS5076800907.html) which are vastly complicated – but a programmer at Ubisoft can’t make the little system do what he wants so he blames the hardware and OS of the PS3 rather than accepting he just doesn’t know the architecture and machine well enough to create a game in the timeframe his boss wants him to do. He instead makes excuses.

Look at the new game called the Force Unleashed from Lucas Arts running very complex AI and very dynamix graphical environments based upon very complex algorithms from Pixelux Entertainment called Digital Molecular Matter.

Frankly its not about the game system having the power or not – its the idiocy of a programmer saying a system just doesn’t have the processing power to implement his algorithms in AI when the other company’s such as Lucas Arts are creating fantastically complex environments and software that frankly make Splinter Cell look primitive.

A programmer is only as good as what he can create – and when a programmer says he can create something – he isn’t much good.

  10. P.S. Sorry for the typos – its hard to type on a handheld driving.

  11. I’m very dissapointed to see a Developer degrade itself to that of an xbox fanboy.

Yes, the PS3 is well suited to media like videos, hi def movies, music and the like, but with some conviction, time, patience, huh, and alot of money, im sure they can produce the desired results that is required to produce the above game.

They are SUPPOSED to be one of the big names in software development, are’nt they?????

Pity they can’t act like it….very dissapointing indeed.

Look at the new game called the Force Unleashed from Lucas Arts running very complex AI and very dynamic graphical environments based upon very complex algorithms from Pixelux Entertainment called Digital Molecular Matter. Hmmm – they can do it… “But boss, really its the machine’s fault.”

  14. “A programmer is only as good as what he can create – and when a programmer says he can’t create something – he isn’t much good.”

    Too true Michael.

  15. WOW, you guys are sad! THIS IS ABOUT GAMES, Right? Not SUV’s!!

Face it, as a “Gaming Machine”, (not a SUV driving Machine) the PS3 is behind. How long can you ignore the reviews and facts that pop-up everyday that 360 games are better all around, still? Don’t tell me to wait till developers get more time with the system, or that the 360 head start is still unfair, please!

Again have fun with your 30fps games.

    Sorry, you lost.

  16. So if I give a programmer a Windows ME box with IE 4.0, and I say “make a cross browser Web 2.0 app”, and he can’t do it then based on your logic “he isn’t much good”?

    Come on.

This developer may be dumb but don’t Just blame the developer, you can blame the tools too! The PS3 is harder to develop for, who fault is that? The developer still, or Sony?

Where is the logic? Not with the PS3 folks, thats for sure!

  17. 30fps 1st gen 360 software madden07
    60fps 2nd gen madden 08

    30fps 1st gen PS3 madden 08
    ??fps 2nd gen

anyone see a possible pattern here?
    can’t wait….

  18. I’m inclined to agree with AK Mac, as far as developer support and development tool’s are concerned. I really dont think sony are going out of their way to help most developers in the creation of games.

However, i don’t agree with the statement from those members of Ubisoft, saying the PS3 isnt capable of producing the same AI routines as the Xbox360. In fact it should either be on par or exceed the Xbox in this area.

So, to sum up, the fault is both sony’s and Ubisoft’s.

    1. Sony for not supporting this developer.

    2. Ubisoft for stooping to Xbox fanboism and not even trying to develop the above game for the PS3.

  19. I might buy this line of spew that the developer has put out – but take a look at what another developer says:

COD4 will be as good on PS3 as on Xbox360 Article posted by XanTium | 15-8-2007 0:19 | Permalink | Digg News » Comment article

Same level of AA between 360/PS3, both @ 60fps.

Hate on the PS3 all you want guys, but we’ve done did it up right for the Sony lovers. Nothing has been 360 footage yet touted as PS3, you crack-heads! I’m not sure whats up with what you guys might have seen at E3, but we do have AA on the PS3.

We have had some of the most talented developers in the world working on the PS3 version since day one. Before they had anything to work with with CoD4, they were taking CoD2 and bringing it over to the PS3. This gave them a massive understanding of how the PS3 hardware works (and only took them a few months). As soon as CoD4 was ready to be under full development, that team began optimizing the game for the PS3. Which was in month 4 or 5 I believe.

We just blew Sony’s socks off at E3. They wanted to know why all 3rd party games didn’t have console parity like we do. They are EXTREMELY excited about CoD4 for the PS3.

and yes, PS3 version has 60 FPS minimum.
    [/QUOTE]

Hmmm… it seems THIS developer loves the PS3 and can create amazing 60fps games with amazing AI (CoD series has awesome AI). Hmmmm. No excuses here… He even says how they learned and how they put it all together.

Again – a lame programmer can only give excuses or lame product. Apparently there are some very good programmers out there, and some programmers than have their favorties toys, and some programmers who just can’t program. I have run large shops of programmers and have been programming in parrallel machines for many years. Some minds can hack it – some can’t. It seems Ubisoft and EA can’t while others have no problems.

  20. Utter rubbish. Granted the PS3 may be harder to develop for, but difficulty doesn’t translate to inability.

Stating that the hardware can’t handle it when other developers are clearly succeeding is stupid. Unless they believe their AI algorithms are vastly superior.

Plus with CoD4 coming out in 60fps, then there’s no excuse for developers to complain that the hardware can’t handle it. In fact, with the visual and AI complexity of CoD4 and the fact that the 2 versions will be entirely identical, there’s no question about the power of the PS3 being sub-par – it IS on par. Whether or not it’s superior is the question, and only TIME will tell.

Which comes to another point, why can’t we tell you to wait for devs to have more time, or that the 360 had a headstart ? They’re totally valid reasons. Time is the most important factor in terms of improving coding and developmental practices.

Sorry AK Mac, but you’re an idiot.

  21. Whats the name of the guy at Ubisoft that says he doesn’t have the programming skills or knowledge to do Splinter Cell on PS3? There should be a public list of these programmers so other company’s are aware of their deficits and do not hire them.

  22. UBISOFT is not the Best when it come to making games. Rainbow Six Vegas no matter how fun the game is the A.I. on the PS3 and 360 suck, and the graphics are on par for the original X-Box.

Nut I will still get Assassin’s creed because it is a different team making the game, and like I said Rainbow Six is still a fun game no matter how last-gen it was. I mean games like Metal Gear Solid: Subsitance, and Prince of Persia are still fun to play, and that’s what it’s all about…. And I don’t mean the Hokie Pokie.

  23. It’s funny how 2nd gen 360 games are only marginaly better than 1st gen PS3. Developers have had more time to learn the 360 than the PS3, which is important in developing games. Just look at the early PS2 games, and then look at the recent ones. HUGE difference. As soon as developers fully grasp the PS3’s capabilities, the results will far exceed 360.

  24. HAHA! PS3 can’t handle AI? Seriously, look at R:FOM, RaCF:ToD, and (to a lesser degree) MotorStorm!

    30FPS games, wtf?

Motorstorm runs 65, RaCF runs 60

PS3 is harder to develop for because of more cores, not crappier devkit.

    Get your facts straight
