Sony's aggressive PS3 online plan
In the darkest recess of Sony's basement, something exciting is brewing. And no, it's not PS3! We all know PS3 is gonna be exciting and everyone is expecting its release fall of 2006 with an amazing specs and line up of games. This is something even bigger and better that will forever change the way next-gen consoles are viewed.
One of the reasons why Xbox 360 and its predecessor are seeing some success is the LIVE feature. The LIVE feature connects people from all over the world to play or against each other for pure entertainment without getting out of their seats. Furthermore, after realizing the potential of online market, Microsoft is delivering digital content via the LIVE people from all over the world such as movie trailers and game previews. This niche is huge and Sony, knowing this, has been developing their online version of LIVE since the network adopter came out for PS2.
In a recent article published by Official Playstation Magazine, Sony is planning to take online service for PS3 to next level. It will not be just a simple "matchmaking services" and "ranking lists", but has the capabilities to deliver rich digital content to users that will be equal to that of the LIVE. Now how do we know this isn't just another rumor? Sony recently started a survey campaign (Sony gears up for online battle?) to find out what type of online services would people want.
From Computerandvideogames.com:
PSM reports that Sony wants much, much more than a simple matchmaking and ranking lists service, and developers in possession of the PS3 dev kits will have to meet with Sony's online compliance team to make sure their titles will work with the projected PlayStation Network.
Unnamed sources quoted by the magazine say Sony plans to develop a full PlayStation Network type service to compete head on with the current version of Live. They also say that the service will integrate the PlayStation Portable, which we've always speculated may act as a controller for the PS3 - and now as a portable connection to the online service. The magazine suggests Sony has been plotting this service since just after the delivery of the PS2 Network adaptor.
Any thoughts?
