Sony Supports PS3 Online in Korea

Korea, second most wired country in the world, will be getting extra treat from Sony. In Korea, gaming competition is so huge that four dedicated T.V stations provide 24 hour coverage on gamers, tournaments, and games. Major tournaments are held on a regular basis which attract millions of viewers and people from all over the globe are coming to Korea to compete against each other. Sony, realizing the potential for online market, made an announcement that PS3 online will come to Korea.

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Japan (SCE WWSJ) and Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA) announced today a joint venture designed to support Online PS3 game development in Korea. Called WA! PS3 Online, this new venture will support small to mid-sized Korean developers in the hope of getting quality Online games out on the PS3.

Development houses that are selected for WA! PS3 Online support will receive monetary and technical backing. Initial funding for the development of game prototypes will be supplied by KIPA, with SCE WWSJ taking over with funding once the real development cycle starts. In addition to funding, SCE WWSJ will supply developers with technical support and free PS3 development kit rentals.
Prior to the start of WA! PS3 Online’s official operations, the two firms will hold a gathering of Korean developers on the 15th. Space at the meeting has been provided for up to 100 developers, but KIPA representatives expect more interest in the program.
