Sony reports that PS3 still on track for spring release

Sony Corporation told Reuters on Thursday that the launch of PS3 is still on track to be released in the spring of 2006 despite industry speculation of delay and concern with losing market share.
Yahoo news reports “a spokesman for Sony, the No. 1 provider of game consoles, said it was still targeting a spring 2006 launch for the PS3, which is key to maintaining its lead in the game console market against Microsoft Corp”.
Lately, Sony’s PS3 has been the debate of many speculators and industry experts alike due to timing of the launch. Many speculated that by launching PS3 in 2006 will greatly hinder the company’s position as number one in the console market. Microsoft has already exploited Sony”s launch date by releasing Xbox 360 a year prior to claim a stake in the 25 billion dollar video game industry.
Moreover, PS3 vs Xbox 360 has become more than just a console war; the winner of this war will lay the foundation for next generation of DVD. The stake in this industry is very critical as the media industry is shifting its attention towards High Definition era. Sony is betting on that PS3 will just do that when it releases.
However, Sony is preparing assiduously and quietly for the PS3 launch; acquiring software companies like Gurilla Games which produced killer title such as Killzone and securing deals to have many exclusive titles (Grand Theft Auto). Also, to amplify Sony”s Blu-Ray technology that will come with PS3, the company has secured plenty of supports from big movie studios and hardware manufacturers.
“The PS3 was touted as being the first high volume Blu-ray player. You want to have an installed base of players if you put out the movies,” said Richard Doherty, analyst with Envisioneering, an industry research firm.
