Sony plans to reduce PS3 cost
Last week, Sony?s CFO Takao Yuhara indicated PS3 will receive cost cutting measures in near future. One of the measures was to reduce the die size to 65nm for the cell processor. Also, Sony would update the circuit design to reduce parts inside the console. Analyst is speculating that the ?reduce the parts? plan would involve removing EE+GS chip which is used to emulate PS2 and PS games on the PS3 console. They could also combine Bluetooth and Wifi into single chip solution. All of these steps would have cascading effect by reducing size, heat, and in turn the overall cost. The newly designed PS3 would not hit the street until older supply have been shipped.
