Sony may drop region-code on PS3?

Our dear friend over at Sony will likely to drop region-coding on playstation 3 games due to global standardization of HDTV. The company sees this as a future trend and likely to offer the same service like sony psp. This is a welcome news to gamers outside of U.S and Japan who wish to purchase foreign games without having to wait or play on heavily modded playstation.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment Australia Michael Ephraim, “If you look at the fact that [the playstation 3] will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there’s a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we’ve done with the PSP.”

Currently, Sony has placed a region-code on playstation and playstation 2 games just like DVDs where gamers can only play the games coded for their country. This situation caused foreign companies to come up with mod-chips that will ignore region-coding so that gamers can play any region-coded games. This is INDEED a good news all over the world as highly anticipated PS3 launch draws.
