Blu-ray has been taking it to HD-DVD lately in terms of hardware sale and movie sales. Since the launch of PS3, Blu-ray movies have steadily outselling its counterpart in terms of movie sales. The European and Australian PS3 launch should only bolster Blu-ray sales.

Today, Sony announced a stand alone Blu-ray player priced at $599. The new model will be capable of doing everything the old model did at $400 cheaper. Some of you might think ?why should I purchase this when you can get Blu-ray player with PS3?? The answer is that PS3 does not support IR technology. This might be a big deal for AV centric consumer who wants Blu-ray player first and game machine second. You can not use universal remote to control PS3 whereas you can with the stand alone players. Nevertheless, it is another triumph for Sony and its partners promoting Blu-ray.
