Sony gives away PS3s to 28,000 Australians
Don’t consider packing your bags and applying for citizenship in Australia just yet; the deal is already over. But for a limited time in the land down other, those who picked themselves up a Bravia LCD television were treated to their own free PS3. The scheme was so successful that Sony managed to give away over 28,000 of the damn things!
“On the Bravia PS3 offer, we’re now up to 28,000-plus – these are audited numbers from Sony. They have taken about a 30 percent market in flat screens for the month of January off the back of that promotion,†said SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim.
Recent figures from Sony showed that over 155,000 PS3s were sold in Australia last year, but Ephraim pointed out that the 28,000 units given away in the Bravia deal are not part of this figure, because industry data tracker GfK Australia “doesn’t report on a console if it’s given away free”.
This would make the PS3’s Australian userbase upwards of 180,000 units, which is certainly an impressive figure.

The same action ran in the Netherlands … haven’t read how much Bravia-PS3-packs they sold… After an action with the 60GB model, they ran an action between Dec 21st and Jan 28th that packed a 40GB PS3 with certain models.
At one point Sony was clearing out an old SKU, I think the 60Gb or80Gb original PS3. In the USA this unit had a price drop. In Australia, they had a surplus, so why not increase the price of a LCD TV a few hundred ozzies, and then sweet’n the deal with a PS3? So they increase the Bravia a bit, and clear out the PS3… Brilliant!
Smart Money for Sony.
