Sony E3 Mega-Round-Up

E3 Banner

With E3 finally over we can breath a collective sigh of relief. So much news, way too much to take in all at one time, right? Well, if you think that, you’ll have you bookmark this article and read it in bitesized chunks, because we’re going to be listing everything Sony-related we can possibly find from this year’s E3. If Kaz Hirai so much as sneezed during the event, we’ll tell you about it. If Jack Tretton blinked in an odd place, we’ll have a screenshot.

Alright, we’re not going to go quite that crazy, but we are going to do a similar, but to a much less psychotic, obsessive compulsive manner. We’re going to list everything that was covered in Sony’s E3 conference and move on from there. So please, read on, get your bookmarking fingers ready and take some kind of pill, we’re about to delve into Sony’s E3 conference.

PS3

  • Sony grew the PS3 install base by 40% last year and there are now 22 million sold globally, achieving their target of selling 10 million PS3s sold over the last fiscal year. The total registered accounts on PSN have grown to more than 24 million worldwide, 475 million pieces of content downloaded.
  • PS3’s expanding presense in Latin America have tripled their sales in the area, is expected to climb to three quarters of a billion dollars worth of sales. They will continue to expand to Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay later this year.
  • inFAMOUS has become this Summer’s biggest blockbuster, with high reviews on many big sites.
  • Uncharted 2 (you can watch the E3 gameplay footage here – do yourself a favour, it’s amazing) is NaughtyDog’s most ambitious project to date and sets the standard for limit pushing on PS3. The multiplayer beta started  at midnight on Tuesday (PST), in case you didn’t know already – we’ll have an impressions up over the next few days.
  • Tretton says MAG is only possible on the PS3. Watch the E3 gameplay footage here – every single person you see in that video is a person who is playing it online at that exact time for the demo. Features airstrikes, vehicles, full 256 player wars, a 3D map that shows every allied player and any enemy players that aren’t hidden, etc. Objectives such as destroying bunkers, anti-aircraft guns, proper tactical warfare. It looks great.
  • FF VII (the PSone Classic) is on the PSN store now for both PS3 and PSP.
  • 6.5 million Home users worldwide, 85% return users. Capcom’s Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 virtual items have sold about 100,000 units in less than 2 months. The EA Sports Complex got more than 1.5 million visit from Home users in it’s first month. New Home spaces are coming, as is Picture Sharing.
  • Rockstar have been working on a PS3 exclusive game; Agent, which is said to be the ‘ultimate action game’. Admittedly, Rockstar said that themselves, but we have nothing else on the game as yet, other than it’s set in the late 70s and involves espionage and assassins. Oh, that and it’s expected that Agent will have the same impact on PS3 as GTA did on the PS2. High expectations indeed.
  • Assassin’s Creed 2 is looking great, see a trailer here and gameplay here. Ezio is not and assassin at first, but will learn to become one during the game, with help from friends like Leonardo Da Vinci. You’ll have new moves, new wristblades, new weapons (such as haldberds, and you can take them from enemies whilst fighting. Ezio is very good with his hands) and a new, smarter AI to fight against. Not to mention 6 additional weapons if you play Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines and connect the two games.
  • Final Fantasy XIV is supposedly exclusive to PS3, though other sources say it isn’t. You can see a trailer for XIII here and XIV here.
  • Watch the E3 tech demo for Sony’s motion controller for PS3 here. It’s very, very impressive and looks like it’ll be much better for implementation into proper games than Microsoft’s Natal will be. It will launch in Spring 2010.
  • Modnation Racers is a new Play. Create. Share. game (the first of which was LittleBigPlanet), and it’s a cart racing game that comes with a great-looking level editor, called the Track Studio. They make an entire track in 5 minutes. You can see the E3 presentation here. It certainly looks like it’ll be great. They say it harnesses the full power of the PS3 for graphics and real time physics.
  • Then there’s Trico, officially named The Last Guardian. It looks incredible. Watch the trailer shown at E3 here. Just go watch it.
  • Gran Turismo 5 teaser trailer here. It looks breathtaking, as you would expect from a Gran Turismo game. Oh, and you can see a bit of vehicle damage in there too…
  • God of War 3. Live gameplay shown at E3. Here. It’s the final chapter in the trilogy, apparently. Even the press start menu looks amazing.

PSP

  • PSP has many great games, such as FFVII: Crisis Core, Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron, Madden NFL 09, God of War Chains of Olympus – if you’re looking for a richer, deeper and more engaging portable experience, PSP is the place to be. 15 million bought a PSP last year, bringing the install base to over 50 million units.
  • Upcoming PSP games include Rockband Unplugged coming next week, Dissidia: Final Fantasy on August 25th, Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines on November 10th. They’re working with Disney to unleash a Hannah Montana bundles with a lilac PSP in July on the unsuspecting world to appeal to tweens. More games for the audience include Petz, Locoroco 2, Patapon 2 and Rockband Unplugged, mentioned earlier, as well as movie and TV content.
  • PSP Go details. Won’t replace PSP-3000, games will be released on both UMD and PSN in the future. New PC PSP browser media controller called Media Go. The Go will release at the same price as the PSP was on release on October 1st. Portable Video Store on PSPs for America.
  • Gran Turismo PSP detailed and dated. Shown running on a PSP Go, is phenomally good looking. 800 cars, 35 traps and 60 layout variations of those tracks. Watch the E3 trailer here and screenshots here. It’s a full scale Gran Turismo for your PSP.
  • Hideo Kojima announces the next true MGS game (Rising is a multiplatform spin-off/side story that doesn’t involve Kojima), called Peace Walker, for the PSP only. You’ll play as Big Boss and the game is headed by Kojima himself and has the main team of MGS4. See the trailer and some screens here
  • Resident Evil PSP for the first time next year in a whole new game specifically designed for PSP.
  • More big name PSP games coming this holiday season, including (click for trailers) LittleBigPlanet, Socom Fireteam Bravo 3, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Motorstorm: Arctic Edge, Hannah Montana (look, a juxtaposition!) and Harry Potter.

Elsewhere at E3, Microsoft show Natal, announce Left 4 Dead 2 just 6 months after the original released, announce Crackdown 2 with a CGI trailer and falsely imply that Metal Gear Solid Rising is 360 exclusive.

Nintendo underwhelm with boring statistics talks, show Wii Motion Plus again, announce a few good looking games, such as a new Metroid (Metroid: Other M), but developed by Team Ninja (the guys behind Ninja Gaiden), Golden Sun for DS, Super Mario Bros Wii, Wii Fit Plus (yes, we sighed too). They generally underwhelmed and easily came last in the E3 conference war.

Well, that’s that. Phew, we can take a breath now.

  1. “Tretton says MAG is only possible on the PS3. Watch the E3 gameplay footage here – every single person you see in that video is a person who is playing it online at that exact time for the demo.”

I won’t deny it, I was sceptical that that Sony could make it work, but they definitely delivered the goods.

“FF VII (the PSone Classic) is on the PSN store now for both PS3 and PSP.”

Bought it the moment it came out. <3
