Sense of Achievement

People like rewards. Goes without saying really. The acknowledgement of a job well done and all that. The same goes for gamers: whether it’s an obscene difficulty setting in DMC4 or trophy for chaining 20 x burnouts in Paradise. We all like a virtual pat on the back. It looks like developers are paying more attention to this and are incorporating rewards into their titles. Of course, gamers on a certain US-based console have had this built in from the get go. So, it’s encouraging to see the same attention to detail being applied to us PS3 fans.

Those screaming around Paradise City will already know that the PS3 version has an achievement system. News floating around the web indicates that Bionic Commando is soon to join the club with special mini games based around performing specific tasks. Capcom have been showing off a demo of the game at the GDC this week, but no word on whether this feature was there on display.

Aside from generally feeling chuffed when you rack up the rewards / trophies (we really need to get a standard PS3 name for them…) it’s great to see more features being added to the PS3 experience. It will be interesting to see how games can integrate this when Home finally opens its virtual doors…

  1. The PS3 version of achievements was always called “Trophies” orginally, due to the fact that when you completed a “trophy” you would get a physical representation of it in you home in ..er.. Home. Of course the only example of I ever saw was in a concept image showing a guy standing next to a Lair trophy .. possibly it was the “Managed to get through stupid second level without screaming at the controls and poor level design” trophy…
