SCEA’s CEO talks Premium PSN at GDC 2010

At this year’s Game Developers Conference, GameTrailers’ Geoff Keighley had the opportunity to talk all things PlayStation with Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. During the interview, the subject of Premium PlayStation Network subscriptions inevitably came up in conversation, but instead of shying away from the topic Tretton kindly gave an official (or, at least, semi-official) statement about Sony’s plans to implement such a service.

SCEA’s laid back Chief Executive explained:

"There’s no question that, if we can come up with a compelling experience that will warrant an investment from consumers, that would be something we’d consider [...] we already feel that we’ve brought a lot of value to the consumers that they have to pay for but, until we feel we have something - like the PlayStation Move - that justifies an investment, we aren’t going to come out with half-cocked technology or product offerings."

It appears Sony is proud enough of the free-of-charge service it currently provides to the PS3 community, and has no intention of adopting a Microsoft mentality towards the PSN until cost-justifying PSN features have been realised.

"But what does that mean for things like cross-game chat?" you ask.  A question to pose at the approaching E3 Expo, maybe...

It actually wouldn't be that hard to do realistically. All it would take is something similar to vent. Some kind of program/service that runs in the background, but uses the main PSN Server. Take for instance that when you play games, the downloader for PSN runs in the background, so it's not too far fetched to do a voice server in a similar fashion.

I thought the main reason cross-game chat would be hard to implement on PSN was that Microsoft provides servers for every game that has an online mode, so they've set them up with the ability to do so (for Xbox Live generally too)... On the other hand, Sony get 3rd-parties to set up the servers and it's down to them to set them up - so it's not likely that any games would be cross-game-chat-compatible.. Still, I could be wrong, and Sony could just be being dicks... :p
