Speaking to EGM, Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, commented that the idea of a a GTA MMO “is very, very doable and is a very, very compelling proposition”. That said, however, he also note out that a title of this scope would ultimately lack relevance.

After all, it would simply be nothing more than thousands of players in one city, with no purpose other than to just endlessly cause mayhem. It might sound like a nice idea for five minutes, but it would not hold up as a game.

Still, it’s a compelling idea, and if the idea was expanded upon, it could be redefining to both the franchise and the industry itself.

Whilst we dwell on the unlikelihood of a massively multiplayer online mayhem though, lets not forget that Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar’s latest project, will feature online multiplayer gameplayer, a first for the series.
