Review: MadCatz Wireless N Adapter

You may be thinking, “Why would I need a wireless adapter for my already wireless enabled (and therefore awesome!) PS3?”. Well, the PS3 supports 802.11B/G but not the newer and more powerful 802.11N. So, for gamers who may have their wireless acess point or router in another room or otherwise need more power and speed, this adapter is all you need.

The MadCatz Wireless N Adapter (MSRP $79.99) allows you to easily hook up your PS3 to a router or wireless access point utilizing 802.11N technology. The installation process took me about 15 minutes and at least 5 of those minutes were because I forgot to write down my security code for my access point. So figure if you’ve had your caffeine for the day (which I hadn’t), you’re looking at about whopping 10 minutes to get this bad boy all set up. In other words, in the amount of time it takes to waste that annoying little turd who keeps trash talking on MW2, you could be enjoying top notch wireless technology (and then proceed to wipe out all the trash talking turds you want) without fear of tripping over wires or being disconnected.

Setup is simple. First, you make a note of your current networking settings because the device requires you to use your PC or Mac to configure the device. Next, disconnect your normal ethernet cable from your PC and change a couple of networking settings. Run the install CD that came with the adapter and by following the on screen instructions, you’ll be all set in about 5 minutes. As I mentioned (and didn’t do), write down your wireless security settings before starting the whole process. Once the adapter is all configured, disconnect it, reconnect your normal network and put the networking settings back to normal.

If your router or access point supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), the above process is even easier. Several steps are replaced with one simple button push on the router/AP and adapter and you’re good to go.

Not everybody will need one of these due to the PS3’s built in wireless support. But, if you are having any troubles such as weak or non-existent signal and your wireless network supports 802.11N then we definitely recommend taking a look! MadCatz can be found at most online retailers and at Matcatz.com. Note, MadCatz makes a lot of other cool PS3 swag so we recommend checking them out!
