Review: Battlefield 1943

Battlefield is a hugely successful pedigree of gaming brilliance. With huge, open maps that are filled with players, tanks and jeeps that are all under a dogfight-dominated sky, it's easy to see why the game was so successful. Who doesn't want to bomb people as they're taking the flag? Who doesn't want to parachute onto a capture point, skillfully take out the enemies guarding it and secure yourself 30 points, whilst looking awesome and feeling like James Bond's slightly more badass son?
Well, if you do (and who doesn't?), BF1943 is the game for you. At just £10/$15 on the Playstation Store, this game is an absolute steal, despite it's flaws. Just like other Battlefield games, the maps are huge and, if you've played Battlefield online before, you'll probably recognise the maps. It comes with 3, Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, plus Coral Sea, which was unlocked after 43 million kills was reached and is an Air Superiority only map. Air Superiority is exactly as it sounds - everyone gets in a plane and dogfights. Meanwhile, the usual mode is the zone capture affair you might expect from Battlefield.
The game runs, for the most part, perfectly. There hasn't been a single crash whilst we've been playing it, though there are a few bugs. Voice chat doesn't work properly, which will hopefully be fixed at some point in the future, and black rectangles continually flash on the screen over some objects and behind your plane - it doesn't happen often, but when it does it's a little distracting and can obscure your view of some enemies, which can obviously be fatal. Other than that, the game looks great; the graphics are bright and vibrant in a way that suits the setting (Pacific Theater), and the draw distance is, as you'd expect from Battlefield, huge, enabling you to snipe people from the other side of the map (provided you're very, very good with a sniper rifle).
There are three classes; Rifleman, Infantry and Scout. The Rifleman has, well a rifle, grenades and rifle grenades for the secondary weapon, which are grenades that you shoot off the end of your rifle. When you've used them all, there's a short cool down time until they simply respawn in your inventory, ready to blow someone up. Choosing Infantry will give you a machine gun, an anti-tank rocket launcher as secondary and grenades, whilst the Scout has a sniper rifle, remote-detonated TNT (perfect for laying traps) and a pistol. Primary weapons have infinite ammo, so you only have to worry about running out of ammo in your clip in the middle of firefights. Which will happen. Multiple times.
Vehicle controls are a little strange at first, with L1 being accelerate and L2 being brake/reverse, but you get used to them quickly enough. Planes can take a little longer to get to grips with, but the controls themselves work fine. You can choose between either an in car/cockpit view for all vehicles or a third person (third vehicle?) view, though if you're using a machine gun on the back of a jeep the third person view is a little useless, as there's no aiming reticule. Planes are equipped with machine guns and what must be the least effective bombs in the history of the planet - it is incredibly hard to actually kill someone, even when you get a dead on hit it doesn't always kill them.
Overall, the BF1943 is well worth the price of admission. It could do with a few more maps, for which we will cross our fingers, but £10/$15 is a steal that just can't be ignored. If you like FPS games you owe it to yourself to get this game.

Finicky piece of writing, finicky blogging site, Document cause bookmarked a person's web page, it's always valuable burden this specific. Data.
I agree with Anti-Flame to the most, The Sniper is a highly effective class (at least in my hands) the only down side is that no-one seems to cover the snipers.
The Smg is ok at range, not perfect but it's not ment to be ... and the Rocket launcher is an absolute beast!!!
And the infantrymen are the rocks! The RPG's are awesome and a pain in the rear at the same time, the bolt action is more powerful than the SMG and when you get up close and personal the melee is a right stab in the eye (pun intended =])
The airplane bombs ARE the most useless invention ever know to man and beast ... I've killed one person with a bomb and that was via a suicide run HAHA
Shame about the lack of trophys though, they could have very easily taken ALL the stamps and made trophys, but never mind.
A new map is definally required now and the mics and black dots NEED fixing.
But all in all for a TENNER ... 8/10
Good review - I found myself relating all to much to the black/grey cuboids popping up, and the ridiculously ineffective bombs (they're alright on vehicles though).
I'm surprised you didn't mention the pros and cons of each class though: Riflemen are probably the most useful for infantry kills, but are hopeless when tanks roll into the base; infantrymen have no range with their SMGs, but are awesome against tanks and can repair vehicles with their wrenches (something I haven't seen many people doing!); snipers are actually fairly useless in my opinion, the bolt-action takes too long seeing as the bullets are only one-hit-kill in the head, when you can just pop them with a few semi-automatic bullets instead. Still, the pistol is really strong up close, so it sorta makes up for it. Just pray you're never up against mid-range enemies, haha.
Oh, and one last thing: whilst the graphics aren't anything great, the water is AWESOME: it's only a simple repetitive wave pattern, but it just looks so gorgeous, especially in the shallows. :)
Well worth your money, everyone, and easily worth an 8/10.
