Red Faction Guerrilla Demo Impressions

After playing Battlefield Bad Company I had a sour taste in my mouth. The game wasgood, however I kept wishing that the destruction was more detailed and not as scripted. Somewhere in between my late night sessions of Bad Company and praying, Volition was working hard. Let me tell you the work has paid off.

Its not like Red Faction is a graphically stunning game because it's not. The character models are slightly above average. Some of the textures are flat, however every time I think of the destruction in this game it makes me feel all fussy inside. Do you want to team kill your ally, *Accidently*  with a pole that smashed him. Do you want to smash through an entire building with a mech? Do you like explosives? Do you want to smash your way through a building with a sledgehammer? Hell lets even add a jetpack. Anything that you ever wished you could destroy, you can.

Volition excels at making games fun, over the top, and ridiculously awesome. It doesn't matter that the gun play is rough around the edges, because most of the time you'll be using a truck, a mech, or more explosives than you can count.

Let's cover some basics of the game, shall we? Red Faction is a third person shooter set in a massive open world on Mars. The first game that it reminded me of was Freedom Fighters. The musical score and mission structure helped reinforce this sense of nostalgia. Red Faction Guerrilla is set 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction, in which you control Alec Mason, an insurgent who sets up a new Red Faction movement that battles for liberation from the Earth Defense Force.

The demo starts off with Alec holding a sledgehammer. A man has given him an order to obtain a walker, to use for unknown purposes. All that matters is that it's important. The course of the demo shows off the impressive destruction system. Every brick can be destroyed, buildings completely demolished and there's a sense of complete freedom when you consider just how much you can bring down to the ground. The demo runs for 10 mins, with a timer. The interesting thing aside from the destruction is that Red Faction can be played run and gun or fully stealth.

With only a few months left before release, Red Faction looks to be a worthy addition in anyone's game collection. It is due for release in June.

I loved this demo, but I also loved the demo for HAZE and FRACTURE and the reviewers dumped those games down the toilet. As horrible as those games supposedly were I had fun playing them just as much as killzone etc

Ha, this sounds exciting! I loved the first one and was hoping this one would return to it's destructive behavior since I feel Red Faction 2 was a major letdown.
