PS3 Killed with Blu-ray Movie -Don’t try this at home

After sitting back and really enjoying thrashing out the Ps3 for what it is “a game console”, we came to the conclusion that there really is more to this box than just playing games. It was time to really test the capabilities and enjoyment of watching blue ray movies.

Sony has undeniably promoted the system as the next generation console system that has definately lived up to expectations and durability as per our recent article – How to kill a ps3 console . This led to one of the most read articles on the net our site has currently had the article read over 70,000 times with David Karakker even commenting on this article on Ps3 Stress Test

Basically the test run this time was to see if we were only to use the console in normal operating conditions how long could we actually view blue ray movies without any interruption to viewing or console use.

The unit was setup in a normal family room operating environment with suitable ventilation and plenty of popcorn. Also this was to actually see if their was enough worthwhile blue-ray titles available for viewing over an extended time that would keep our interest

Current titles that were used
Blood Diamond
Hellboy
Ghost Rider
Coming to America
Norbit
300
The Patriot
The Fifth Element (classic viewing watched 5 times over 168hour period)
Shooter
Untouchables
The Warriors
Wild Things (late night home alone viewing)
Flatliners
Wild Hogs
Blade Runner ( Where Sci Fi really began)
Pirates of the Carribean
Casino Royale
Disturbia – (that gets you thinking)
Bram Stokers – Dracula – (not the best drac movie around)
Underworld – (worth watching 3 times because of Kate Beckinsale)
Black Hawk Down – (a little blood never goes astray)

At the commencement of testing a digital temperature guage was inserted thru the tray of of the Ps3 to give us an accurate internal operating temperatures – starting temperature was cool 71.6F

First movie to start proceedings was something light

Black Hawk Down
Untouchables
Flatliners
Bladerunner
**After this movie we saw the temperature guage reach 78.4F**

A Range of movies were viewed continuously over the next 7 days 168 hours of non stop mind bending entertainment. Results are listed below for temperature settings for each 24hour period

It must be stated at the end of 4 days, we had a slight outage of 30minutes that we thought was the Ps3 Crashing but in fact we traced this back to the Plasma Screen shutting itself off automatically. After resetting the plasma back to factory defaults everything was fine.

24Hrs 48Hrs 72Hrs 96Hrs 120Hrs 144Hrs 164Hrs
79.9f 87F 102F 92F 110F 106F 119F

After Six days of continuous movies we witnessed the slow degradation of quality of signal for the last 6 hours of movies and then the system crashed. Was it really possibly after the torture of the last tests on “How to kill a ps3 console” that we had succeeded, keeping in mind that this was the same console. The console was completely dead. After further investigation we discovered the reason the console had failed was due to the “internal thermal guage” we had placed thru the tray, the solenoid had melted itself to the console board and caused the killing of a PS3 console.

We should deem from this test that under normal operating conditions with no external items inserted into places where they shouldnt be the PS3 consoles lives on thru anything that has been thrown at it.

Time for a new console.

Blue Ray Movies that we watched

  1. Bullshit maker ps3 has even been tested in a sauna perfectly working, try it again your test sucks as u do

  2. Whats with the title? Did a blu ray movie kill the console or was it the thermal sensor you put in through the side?

Oh I see “After further investigation we discovered the reason the console had failed was due to the “internal thermal guage” we had placed thru the tray”

Nice provocational title then to get all the xbox and hd dvd fans to read it :)

  3. I mean really who’s gonna watch movies all this time….ppl got work to do lives to live & 1 more thing,if the thermal u placed was the failure cause then why did u blame Blu-Ray on ur bad tools?

  4. You must ahve wathced some pretty bad movies, if you made the PS3 cry, lets try this with your 360, lol see who overheats first.

  5. Read the whole article Ciro. The thermal gauge they inserted caused the failure, not the unit.

  6. Nice.
Why don’t you try the same with a good thermal gauge better that the trash you used before?! :-(

  7. Guys read the whole article before posting anything. The titles, well,, they are trying to get people’s attention.

  8. The Thread should be relabeled….”Thermal Gage kills PS3″…….misleading titles suck :)

  9. Just proves again that sony has made a great console mabey if they tried a new artical “How to kill a ps3… Dynamite”

  10. why everybody get mad??!!…is obvious that if you push the machine to such great effort will get destroyed…. that doesnt mean that PS3

  11. why everybody get mad??!!…is obvious that if you push the machine to such great effort will gett destroyed…. that doesnt mean that PS3 is crap, (we) fans of sony know that is good. what i wonder is how some people have so much useless time in their lives that they use it to ruin a game console, when there is so many kids craving for getting one….but that is how consumism affect some countries that dont know more than waist…
    just sad….
All ps3 users: Enjoy it!!!…is the best machine ever!!!!

  12. This site is really wierd. Most of the time it seems pretty objective, but every once and awhile this dude drops some really ugly mojo on Sony and the PS3. Maybe bi-polar disorder? I dunno.

The problem is, like most biased newpaper articles, people usually only read the headline and then scan the rest. It’s a fact. So the title makes you think badly about the PS3. it’s only the last sentence that tells you the truth.

Maybe this was just an inadvertant mistake?

  13. There is no way the PS3 would not be able to run 24/7!

The people at Folding@Home does that and Sony’s dedicated Warhawk servers are just racked PS3s running nonstop. I really think there is no point in pointing out how reliable the PS3 is anymore, Sony has already reported it to be 0.2%, lowest fail rate in history.

  14. Hey,
guys make sure you read the whole article, this again is a great confirmation of the PS3 system, and do we really want PS3 sites that offer all the same news and views. This site has always been great for offering an alternative and different view on the console. They are definately pro PS3, as for the headline its good reading.

  15. Great Article, shows how good the ps3 really is,
    Down with xbox360

  16. These test just confirms what the great and vast majority of PS3 owners already know. The PS3 is a rock solid next-gen console providing the constantly improving gaming experience, the web, on-line play, Playstation Home(soon), Folding@Home(what a great idea, I call it gaming for humanity), Blue-Ray Movies, Video Capability, Photo Albums, Music and the list goes on. I’ve never even had a hint of a problem since I purchased my PS3 on launch day. It has worked an performed for days non-stop with nothing going wrong. I know at least 3-4 people who are on their third Xbox360. I’ve seen reports on IGN of a 33% failure rate. I believe the Xbox 360 has some great features, I just think Microsoft over-estimated how cheaply they could design and build it. Clearly it wasn’t designed with enough longevity in mind. PS3 is touted by Sony to have a 10-year life cycle. You have to build a solid design structure to claim that kind of longevity. Enough, the PS3 is clearly a great system, bar none!

  17. Just look at how well the other PlayStations have lasted as a testomony to how top notch sony’s game console QC is in contrast to Microsoft. I had 3 xbox repaired. The PS3 will be as good.

  18. HAHAHAHAHA being a ps3 user i shouldnt be laughing xD lol.. well knowing that you do test with the PS3 why not try the same with the other consoles, id really want to know how the others perform!

  19. Was the thermal gauge made by Microsoft??

  20. lol, the ps3 didn’t actually break becuse of the temp, it only broke casue of the thermometer you stuck in it…..

  21. 1.Based on a recent poll that was conducted by DailyTech with retailers nationwide, the Xbox 360 was unanimously named the least reliable gaming console in recent history. The high failure rate of the 360 has sent EB games officials back to the drawing board to revise their console warranty policy in 2007 and as a result the one year warranty price on a console is now nearly double!

lol, So while the 360 is the market leader with the Wii gaining fast, maybe consumers should be giving the Playstation 3 a second or “third” look before picking up a next gen console. While we admit that things are not looking great for Sony right now, the company is not going to roll over and die, Blu-ray is the current market leader, and the Playstation 3’s list of titles will only improve as time goes by and more developers familiarize themselves with it’s specs.

  22. What kind of retarded test is this?!?!?! I totally agree with these people… I mean who has the time to watch movies EVERY minute/hour/second of the day/week/month?!?! That test isn’t relavent at all!! Retards…. from seeing what you guys called a “test” I don’t think you are even capable of doing a correct legitament test. PS3 OWNS.

—* And, the blue-ray player on the PS3 works just fine. I bought my ps3 the morning it came out for sale to the public and have not had one single problem with it.
