We usually don’t bother with rumours here on the PS3 Vault, but this one has been doing the rounds a lot. According to rumours from “anonymous sources” that attended a Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing last Friday, SCEE’s David Reeves revealed that after March next year, Sony will be getting “more competitive” with prices.

Accordingly, Reeves apparently pointed out the PS3 has a larger install base than the Xbox 360 in PAL territories, a price drop would also that gap of that to increase increase in 2009. Also mentioned were new “technological innovations” coming to the PS3 and PSP… though details fell short about what they meant.

This goes strongly against constant claims Sony have made about not reducing the PS3’s price in the near future, so we’re chalking this one up as just another unsubstantiated rumour unlit Sony comes out and says otherwise.

What do you think? Should the price of the PS3 be reduced to appeal to more consumers, or is the price just fine where it stands?

  1. Wow – this would be a good move for bringing more gamers to PS3, as the Xbox APPEARS better value when first purchased (although if you include the need to buy a wireless router and a Live subscription, on top of the price of an Elite, which is the only real choice that can compete with the PS3, they’re almost exactly the same). I already have one, evidently, but the fact that lowering the price could potentially bring more players to Sony is happy news. =]
However, there’s nothing wrong with the current price (although the original price, at £425, was extortionate…)

  2. I honestly believe that there will be a price drop coming next year. I think the only reason Sony is denying this is because the christmas holiday is coming and if they confirmed that the PS3 will get a price drop a lot people will just wait a few months to get it at a lower price thus cutting into their holiday sales. If they do slash the price next year it will help bring a wider audience to the PS3. It could only mean good things! Happy Gaming!!! :D

  3. Yeah, they are going to have to match that 199 price tag. I bet people would think a $299 price tag reasonable if the system came with another controller, remote, and game. Pretty soon blue ray players will be $100. No one is going to pay 4 times that for a blue ray player and a game console combined. This should be apparent by now considering the stellar sales of the Wii & 360. Good luck Sony, the economy is getting worse, not better and if given a choice, people are going to opt for the cheaper alternative, even if its a lower quality product. That’s why I have a Wii (even though I hardly play it unless people come over) and do not plan on getting another console until the PS3 comes down or Microsoft stops charging so much for Xbox add-ons like wireless & memory. Part of me feels you deserve to get hit hard and maybe you will come to your economic senses before you go under.

  4. Sony is only reflecting the market values of their systems. I think they finally realized most gamers are not stupid and won’t pay premiums for game consoles that isn’t worth the money. The price to produce Blue-Ray technology has gone way down, and by March 2009 I won’t be surprise to see less than $100 Blue-Ray players on the market.

My guess for “technological innovations” is better hard drive. Hard drives are dirt cheap and it actually cost more to produce 80 GB than 250 GB. But Sony will pretend the average consumer doesn’t know that and stick a big hard drive in to justify their prices.

In short, the next SKU of PS3 by my guess is a “better Blue Ray reader” with “bigger hard drive” at around 250 GB and they will try to sell that for $299 and justify that we’re getting a “better” product than X360 or Wii

  5. Well now that this rumors out … i’m not getting a PS3 this chrismas so this could be a rumor started by a 360 fan to lower sales but w/e i have a 360. I wanted the PS3 so i can get some Killzone 2 goin l8 feb. But now this is out if a 80gb will drop to $300 I’l definatley get I’l have more than 200+ dollars saved over in cash by then and my birthday is in March.

  6. yeah dude i agree with that. i was just going to buy an 80GB bundle but i think i’ll wait a couple months now. the game i really want to play is KZ 2 which is out in Feb 09 so no rush

  7. I was about to buy an 80gb bundle w. little big planet, resistance 2 and fifa 09 for £300, after selling my 360, but i may wait now due to rumoured price drops. Do you think i should sell the 360 (which has broke twice now in 12 months,) and invest £40 in xbox live for another year, or go for a ps3, now or later? Thanks.

  8. I Have to wait now i almost buy me a ps3 today but i was a 100 dollars short so i thought to wait until payday,i was kind of desperate my 360 broke,i wanted to get a blue ray so the ps3 was the best choice but the price was high plus it doesn´t come with games or hdmi cable so thats an extra 100 right there,i am glad there is hope of a price cut,i have had xbox for 6 years but i just realize they have too much to work and the next console even if they add wi fi,hd player and xbox live free menbership i think it would cost the same as the ps3 when it came out $600,i will wait to buy a ps3.

  9. PS3 drops to 300 or less with an extra controller id buy right now but im gonna wait till then because as of now its not worth it

  10. We should start a petition telling sony to drop the price of their ps3….I agree if ps3 were to drop to 300 with an extra controller id buy it today!

  11. If they do drop the PS3 price, they at least need to start selling the 60GB and 40GB models again. I bought a 80GB PS3 unaware that it did not have backwards compatibility and I returned it. So Sony you just lost $400 from me. If the price for the 80GB dropped from $399 to $299 i would not think twice about buying it. But I still strongly agree that they need to start bringing backwards compatibility back.

  12. I almost bought one today but the $399 price tag stopped me dead in my tracks. Maybe it is time for the XBox, at least I can play Fable 2 on it.

  13. I’d say it only excites me cause I don’t want to shell out for a new gaming Laptop to play DC universe online. If i can pay less for the PS3 then cool. DCO won’t be out till late 2009

  14. They need to drop the 60/80 gig to $200 and either make new colors or a slim version.

  15. man so much to start with i have a 360 i luv it i game on it all the time but there is some games that i would like to play but they are not on the 360 i want a ps3 but right now the way the economy is hurting i will wait but as soon as sony drop the price best believe im on it

  16. Hey, What is backwards compatibility ?

  17. so basically, drop the price Sony, and every gamer under the sun, will be at your fingertips….

    come now..

we been waiting long enough for this price drop…

and to reply to J, backwards compatibility is being able to play ps2/ps1 games on your ps3.. which is awesome, no idea why they took it away..
something about changing the graphics processors which couldnt accomadate the old games, or somthing…

Until I see you all on the PSN,

    Laters

  18. So far its has been 4 months n no price drop…. i agree it the ps3 cost 300 dollars dollars ill buy it… but for now ill wait.

  19. This price drop would benefit the ps3 almost tremendously. All my friends start talking about selling their xbox 360’s for PS3’s if the price drop would happen. And as you would all know, convince one of your friends to sell their 360 for a ps3 than all your friends would do the same to play with eachother. So far, the $400 ps3 is nowhere near my budget. If it would drop to $300 than i would run to the store, call all my friends to meet me there, and we’ll sell our 360’s in no time.

  20. I THINK THE PRICE SHOULD GO DOWN BECAUSE THAT WAY MORE PEOPLE WILL BUY THE SYSTEM AND MAYBE YOU WILL SELL ALOT OF SYSTEMS

  21. personally I think it should be dropped even by 50$ even to me that allows you to get a game or controller, my brother bought his about 2 days after the release for 800$ CDN, I’m a die hard PS fan from ps1,2,3 none of that nintendo 64 gamecube xbox shit, either way with rumors flooting around I’ve decided to wait until June/July and if nothing by then I might have to suck it up and fork out the 400$

  22. I so wish they dropped the price at least to $300. I gotta wait 1 month till my b-day on which i get $500 then i’ll get it but still sony should drop their price its way too much

  23. PS3 is already much better then the Xbox with the free internet and built in wireless this price drop is just going to do more pwning….

  24. i have to wait untill christmas or next year on my birthday to get one. so sony really needs to drop the price tag because i only get between 300 to 400 dollars and i really want one. the only thing i have is a ds lite and a wii

  25. Yep I gave in and bought the Ps3 lol, even though 3 or 4 comments above I said I would wait,

good deal though got 180G for 500$ traded the 3 games it came with for 100$ so dbl up on the memory for the same price :D just watch for deals and forking over the cash isn’t that hard, like I know around x-mas they had a deal that it came with NHL 09

  26. I’m an owner of a XBOX 360 and the first one i ever had got the three rings last december and i’ve had that one for 5 or 6 years prier to getting the red lights.

I am considering on buying a PS3 and think that $399 isn’t a bad deal… BUT, when they come for that price they usually come with absolutely no games. Which, i think, is totally lame-ass.

For the price you could by the PS3 for, I could get an XBOX AND GAMES. Now, i’m not a complete gaming nerd or whatever, but if i were Sony i would brind the PS3 down even 50-60 dollars more. Especially if their looking for people to trust in them more.

  27. Had a 360 since they came out. The Internet has all sorts or rumors relating to a price drop dating back to 2008, many said June at the latest, it is June no price drop, my local game crazy said they don’t expect and haven’t heard anything.

Reality is for there sales Sony is not going to announce the price drop until it happens maybe a week before…

$300 is much more appropriate and a good value, $400 is too much.

I was given money to buy one, I still haven’t because of the price, I have tried to obtain a used one on craigslist to save some money.

A price drop to $300 I would buy one in a heartbeat, as it is I am waiting it out, but desperately want one. The price is too much for what it is.

  28. A PS3 is easily worth the asking price already.

  29. i would DEFINATELY buy a ps3 if the prices went down. COME ON SONY…… PLEASE!!!!

  30. If Sony drops prices i will probaly get one this Christmas or hopefully sooner PLEASE!!!!!!!!! SONY!!!!!!!!!

  31. I say they should reduce the price for the PS3. I’m sure many other people think the price for it today is reasonable, I won’t argue. But it’s hard for people like me to save money up for one.

  32. sonny should drop down its to much right now for alot of people

  33. I am hoping for a Christmas price drop for the PS3 because i just got rid of my 360 cause im tired of getting ripped off from Microsoft… I am 15 and i want to have my child years back with that awesome controller sony made, and the price they offered. if it went for 250 for chrisrmas id get it today. a ps3 is all im asking for for christmas. remember it is a computer too… 250 dollars and im sold… Thanks happy holidays

  34. i want to buy a ps3 but…i don’t know that price…….@_@
