PS3 Games: Armored Core 4 preview

From Software has released a preview for its upcoming release of Armored Core 4. This franchise started out in PS1 has spun many sequels on PS2 and PSP. The players take the role of resistance fighting mega corporations that have oppressed general population. You take control of various mechs on 37 missions. Each mission consists of specific objectives leading to next mission. The game allows for various levels of customization to the mechs ranging from color of mechs to weapons. The multiplayer consists of split screen death match for offline play and straight of team based death match for online play. The graphics are vastly improved over the PS1 and PS2 versions of the game. The environmental details have received big boost from powerful PS3 hardware. The game will be released in spring of 2007.
The visuals in the game have seen some polish since TGS and are a flashy assortment of detailed (and destructible) mechs and environments. It goes without saying that the mechs have benefited from the power of the new platform and show off a nice sampling of what the PS3 has to offer. The environments are looking to be a bit more hit or miss. The larger outdoor areas seem a bit too sprawling, although we appreciate that you can tear through such large areas. The smaller maps, though feeling a bit cramped, offer a very cool level of interactivity. One area demoed for us saw a mech just about level an entire room during combat. In addition, the various explosions and special effects do a good job of complementing the action.
