In spite of the stigma that has surrounded first-party sports games for some time, Sony has continued to build esteem and sales over the past year or so. It started with last year’s MLB: The Show installment, which managed to outshine 2K’s baseball effort with a little bit of elbow grease and some high ideals.

The same happened this year with SCEA’s baseball title. The publisher is hoping to see the same happen with basketball. In the past, we’ve described PS2 versions of NBA games as the equivalent of swift and severe injuries to the junk. However, last year’s launch title strove for more, and certainly got it. While NBA 2K7 seemed to rule the roost for many PS3 owners at launch, NBA 07 got something that the series hadn’t in quite some time: respect. Sony San Diego is working at gaining more of it in the face of widening competition for the 2008 season.
