PS3 Attracts Oldest Male Audience, Wii Youngest

Tag: Main

The folks at Nielsen have put down their remote controls and apparently stopped for a minute to ponder things more important than how many people watched American Idol last night. The result - the Sony PlayStation 3 attracts the oldest male audience, the Wii the youngest. The Xbox 360 stands right in the middle.

Here are the figures: The PlayStation 3 had the oldest average male age at 18-24. Nielsen theorized that this is due to many games having started out with the original PlayStation and PS2 and graduating on up to the PS3. Sony also pulls in the 18-24 female age range as well.

The Wii had the youngest male audience with 6-11 years old while the women age range was from 25-34. The Wii also does the best with women over 35 compared to the other consoles. Women cited Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Wii fit as the main attractions.

Microsoft attracts the highest range of males in the 12-17 range and women at 25-34, quite similar to the Wii. As a final interesting note, the average play time for the Wii lags behind both the 360 and the PS3. Makes sense - after all, one can only shoot ducks or play with Ravin Rabids for so long before getting itchy to slice off some limbs in Dead Space!

Please let us know your thoughts and why you chose the console you did and if you think your age affected that decision. Thanks!

Well said Jason.

I started with Atari 2600, then Nintendo ( I remember saying-'Cool, it has TWO buttons' lol )
then on to SuperNintendo and eventually PS, and PS2.

In my adult life I went XBox and have been a lover ever since. Of course, at the moment I have the PS3, primarily bc I wanted a BluRay player and I'd be DARNED if I was gonna pay that much for a standalone, when I could get a game system and more for the same price-at least thats how I sold it to the wife anyway-haha.
But I'm still an XBox guy at heart and if Microsoft added BluRay to it tomorrow I would trade the PS3 in in a heartbeat...
Okay, so I wouldn't, but I still plan to get one when my economy improves (and my wife lets me).

It all boils down to preference...Coke-Pepsi, Ford-Chevy blahblahblah. You like what you like. There are features of both systems that I love AND hate.
i.e. Rechargeable controllers vs non...Free online network vs not...a big controller that fits my hand perfectly vs small one...etc etc.

Interesting statistics tho.

When it comes down to it "best" is just a matter of opinion, no matter how you look at it or say it.

Wii markets to a particular audience, and does extremely well in that market. I also believe that market will grow with things like Wii Fit that appeals to a wider market.

The 360 has a strong following, stronger than the PS3. Whether it is because of Microsoft's marketing, or because they were out there a year before the PS3, it doesn't really matter. They beat Sony to the punch, and were able to steal a lot of Sony's power. For a year, that was the best, and even when the PS3 was first released, the release was rocky, further strengthening Microsoft's hold.

As for the PS3, perhaps the "older" were willing to hold out longer, knowing what lay ahead. Or perhaps they were jaded against Microsoft. Yes, from a technology standpoint, the PS3 has a lot in its favor, but you pay for that as the cost is higher than the 360.

From the standpoint of gaming power and graphics, I really doubt there is a substantial difference between the PS3 and the 360, so using that as an argument falls short, IMO. Again, it comes down to personal preference.

For me, I started with the Atari 2600 and moved to the Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Final Fantasy was one of my favorite games on the two NES systems. When I got a gaming system again, it was the PS2, specifically for the Final Fantasy Series. As I had the PS2, I upgraded to the PS3 for the BluRay capabilities. I see no reason to get the 360, and do have a Wii, specifically for Wii Fit and the like.

"when it comes down to it, Wii’s are for kids, 360’s are for followers and halo lovers, and PS3’s are for the wise…" so very true :D

for some who started out with atari, I have been playing video games since before i can remember. I personally have a PS3 for many reasons, the last one being age...really i guess it comes down to me hating the 360 with a passion, dont want to pay to play online games...severs are flippin player hosted, so what are you paying xbox live for....idk, maybe someone else does...i pay nothing to PSN and get more features than xbox live, on top of the crap ton of features to come to PS3....when it comes down to it, Wii's are for kids, 360's are for followers and halo lovers, and PS3's are for the wise...

no im not a fanboy...I just like to have the best...and anyone who argues the PS3 not being the most powerful and advanced gaming system (other than some crazy PCs im sure somebodys uncle built) out there, is really just a product of microsoft marketing campain...
