PS3 Almost Didn’t Make it : Sony’s CEO
Howard Stringer, the Chairman of Sony Corporation, has conceded in a recent talk that the PS3 was on “life support” as a result of a shaky start which would have been “catastrophic” for Sony.During the Wall Street Journal’s “D: All Things Digital” conference yesterday, Stringer commented that the situation has improved and, as hardware costs come down and software adding more revenue to the bottom line. He further observed that upcoming titles would use “the full capacity” of the PS3 and that titles would look “spectacular”.
Stringer also noted that, had Sony lost the format war to “HD-DVD” that he would forever had had a reference to “Betamax” follow him wherever he went. He denied winning the battle by writing checks to studios to support the format.
