PS3 80GB To Be Discontinued, Low Sales Cited

Rumors have been flying and sources have been talking. But now it seems a lot more official when it was revealed from an internal, Best Buy memo, that “The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won’t be replaced at this time. It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time.”

Another corporate retail source (not Best Buy) has confirmed that something is afoot but can’t comment further until the 80GB models are all gone. Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey commented, “Sony is likely dumping the 80GB version because it has failed to meet internal sales projections.”

He added, “A recessionary environment will likely punctuate the 80GB version’s relative and absolute retail sales disappointment. The recently released 40GB version is getting traction at retail, suggesting backward compatibility takes a backseat to the console’s price point for current buyers.”

At this point, we’re not quite sure what Sony is up to. This author has the 80GB version and loves it though I certainly am not using all of that hard disk space. The 40GB model continues to sell well so it can be implied that backwards compatibility is not a big deal whereas the price point is very attractive to new purchasers. Perhaps a larger model (120GB?) is on the way? We’ll let you know as we hear more.

  1. Yea, i have read about this earlier today. I think it’s stupid to drop the 80 gb. I just got it recently and love it. I have to say, most people i know would rather spend 100 more dollars for the extra space and a game, rather than a movie. Sony should give it time, rather than pulling it right away.

  2. Unless you’re poor as hell.

When I had to choose between a 400 dollar Xbox, or a 8 million dollar ps3, I was going to go xbox. Then I saw a 400 dollar ps3, screamed hell yea, and bought it.

I can buy my own hard drive, and I already have a ps2….why spend 100 dollars for a…card reader?

  3. try to buy a card reader that outputs to HDTV and has 40GB storage and you’ll understand…

  4. Can’t you hook up a card reader to the PS3 via USB (and thus outputs it to HDTV)?

  5. Best Buy has nothing to exchange now if your 80 gb has a problem. i bought the extended warrenty and it does no good. they will refund my money but cant exchange it because they are not stocking it. called sony and was told on the phone they just cant meet demand. who knows!
