PlayStation Phone on the way

As a company, Sony has always had its hand in all assets of technology. Although the gaming division, Sony Computer Entertainment, is generally of high importance to us, the firm is also known for its high quality HDTVs, cameras and mobile phones.

We’ve already seen what can happen when gaming and cell phones collide - the infamous N-gage. However, what happens when one of the largest gaming companies in the industry steps up to the task to take a stab at a previously unsuccessful market?

We’ll soon find out as the Sony Ericsson gaming head, Peter Ahnegard, recently announced the existence of a PlayStation-branded phone. No official name has been announced for the PSP… wait. That acronym’s already taken, so we’ll just call it the PS Phone for now.

When asked about a launch date for the newly announced phone/gaming device, Ahnegard responded quite vaguely.

“It’s obviously something that we’re looking at but right now I can’t really comment. Before Christmas, certainly… but exactly which Christmas I can’t confirm!”

We’ll have more news for you on the PS Phone when it becomes available.

  1. Sony can’t even marry the PSP to the PS3….what instills any confidence that they can make it useful with a phone?

  2. I have mixed feelings about this in that while it is good to see how they are so concentrated on investing their resources in the PS3, I fear they might be spreading themselves a bit thin by developing so many things at once (PS3 OS, games, PVR, etc).

I believe they are trying to open new doors to consoles instead of just following the footsteps of the 360, which started ahead of them. Home would be a good example of how they didn’t want to just copy XBL.
