Phil Harrison Interview

GameDaily Biz recently scored an interview with Phil Harrison of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios at D.I.C.E. The interview encompassed many subjects including negativity from the press, sluggish PS3 sales, price cuts, and rumble function for the controller.

When asked about how he feels about the negative publicity, Harrison responded that ?the so called negativity is in a fairly narrow section of the media. The most important thing, however, is that the people who buy the system love it, and the fact that we have great reaction?great scores if you will?from the people who bought PS3 [who've enjoyed] the games that they’ve played and the services that they get.? I think Mr. Harrison is exaggerating when he said that they have received great reaction from the gamers themselves, or that the criticism comes from ?narrow? section of media. Reactions from media and PS3 owners have been lukewarm at best. Consensus across the board is that the PS3 does bring great hardware to the market, albeit it with high price and crappy games to the date. He was than asked about the rumored price cut. He said Sony was looking into cost cutting measures such as reduction or combination of components. We now know that PAL PS3 will have gimped PS2 support. Maybe Phil Harrison knew about the nerf when he gave this interview.

On the topic of sluggish PS3 sales, Harrison claimed that reason why you can find PS3 in stores and can?t find a store with Wii in stock is due to Sony?s sophisticated supply chain. This I find it very difficult to believe. Wii has consistently beaten PS3 in terms of sales. If PS3 was restocked constantly, PS3 should be beating Wii in the sales chart.

One more interesting tidbit from the interview may be the possibility of rumble support for PS3 games. While Sony themselves won?t ship with rumble enabled controller, Harrison admitted 3rd party could release a controller with rumble function in the future. This could mean Splitfish can bring their rumble technology to PS3 platform. While I think there is more interesting possibility for motion sensing than rumble function, it would be good idea to have rumble controllers for certain types of games.
