People get Yellow Lights, Blame Vidzone, Are Wrong

People have downloaded VidZone (why shouldn't they? It's impressively well done) and, after using it for a while and clicking one of the ads, which take you to the PSN store, have experienced a crash. After restarting, they have discovered that they have got the dreaded 'yellow light of death', which stops the PS3 from starting and must be sent off to be fixed, much like the 360's RRoD. Naturally, they blamed VidZone and complained on various forums.

However, the YLoD is only caused by over heating, meaning that the the application didn't do it. The only way to fight this is by doing what you should've been doing all along; keep you PS3 in a well ventilated space, with a few empty inches around it at all times. This should stop any overheating and the appearance of any deceptively coloured lights. So, go do that, then.

It would be interesting to know what the room temperature and where in the world you live when this is happening. My ps3 is on everyday but I have actually made an effort on the rare occasion that i vacuum to actually remove the dust from the ventilation mesh.. I have had it lock up near the end of fallout, but I just restarted it. There is considerable amount of dust that accumulates around the memory stick ports and usb plugs, so maybe models that do not have those feature opening present may have an increased risk for overheating? I keep my ps3 vertical, because it is common sense to me that this will, offer a greater convection coolong. Hope I never see such a yellow light..

Is VidZone just an EU product? I live in the United States, and never saw it on the PSN, though this article is making less jealous of those who have, it still seem like a neat service to have.

well, im leaning more towards the overworking theory, as fallout 3 does freeze frequently and causes the hard drive to repeatedly reread the disc whitch essentially heats up the ps3, however my best bet is that the ps3's are being slaughtered by the content vidzone has provided for your viewing pleasure, but overheating is the " Key ingredient " for the YLoD

I got a YloD after an intense COD4 match!! My PS3 in ver open area and still yellow lighted. Thankfully Sony replaced even outside of warrenty. I have a couple of mates who, in the first hour or so, of VidZone going live, experienced issues with freezing and not restarting. No YLoD though ...

I've got to agree with Kevin somehow... Whilst you say YLoD is caused by overheating, I got mine on my first PS3 when it was kept in a very well ventilated place, with a cool circulation of air around the entire room. I actually got it because it was overworking itself when playing Fallout 3, as the game pushed it too hard, so it crashed. I'm reckoning that perhaps VidZone is a power-hungry application, and when people are trying to open the PS Store at the same time, it's simply causing it to buckle...?
Just an idea, because I'd be very surprised if all these people experiencing the fatal error at precisely the same moment is caused by poor ventilation, Gamoc. =/

I do not beleive the yellow light is only cause by overheating. I dont trust Sony on that one. I got the yellow light after I tried loading an old Pelican Codebreaker PS2 disc on my PS3. It may be coincidence but I have a feeling overheating is not the only thing that causes the yellow light. The manual says to restart the PS3 after letting it cool but of course that doesnt work. I do not trust Sony on this one.

hmmm, why am i not convinced...

People obviously went to the store to down load the app without an issue, so surely this MUST be related to the app (if indirectly) as with so many people affected at the same time doing the same thing, the app must be "causing" the overheating.
