Speaking to Firing Squad recently, John Hight, director of external development at Sony’s Santa Monica studio, has confirmed that PS3 owners will be able to download remake of classic titles just as Xbox 360 owners would via Xbox Live. This comes at a crucial time when both companies are competing to get more consumers online via their consoles. Xbox Live already hit 100k paying subscriber mark this year, but Sony is offering its online service for free to PS3 owners.
This so called “e-Distribution Initiative”, will allow third party publishers updated versions of classic arcade games for PS3 owners to download and play. Unlike Xbox Live where developers are confined to 50MB of storage space, Sony is allowing up to 500MB of space for developers to play around with. “We’ve arbitrarily set a limit of 500MB to keep download times reasonable,” he admitted. “[But] Since we’ve got plenty of HD space we can accommodate even bigger games and a lot of them.”
