Upcoming MW3 patch to tweak shotguns, nerf Akimbo and more

Tag: Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 3

Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert Bowling has published an update to the official Call of Duty forums detailing Patch 1.08 for Modern Warfare 3, and how it will impact on the current state of online multiplayer – hopefully for the better.

The changes Patch 1.08 will introduce, which are live on Xbox 360 and soon to be on PS3 and PC, are as follows:

"TU8: Networking enhancements, Theater improvements and fixes, Further improvements to 'Host Disadvantage' / 'Lag Comp', Increased speed of YouTube uploads from 32k to 256k, Nerf to all Akimbo weapons (reduced fire rate), Shotgun re-balance (Slight nerf to Striker, slight buff to all other shotguns), Fix that prevents some users from not receiving their prestige token after prestiging, fix stat bug that retains 'games played' stat across prestiges."

That’s the overview, but let us give you a few specifics:

  • The Striker: post-patch, each Striker burst will fire six pellets in a reduced spread, therefore delivering less damage per burst. All other shotguns will fire nine pellets, so their damage statistics have been boosted slightly (thank you MP1st)
  • Akimbo: dual-wielded weapons will be nerfed across the board, not just the spam-friendly FMG9s. The fire rate of machine pistols (and possibly handguns) with Akimbo equipped will drop by 50%
  • Adjustments to lag compensation will mean that hosts with faster broadband connections will suffer less latency, and thus gameplay should be smoother for all as a consequence. Should

We imagine support for the game’s first content drops, multiplayer maps Liberation and Piazza (currently only available to Premium Elite subscribers on Xbox 360) will also be included.

Happy? Sad? Impressed? Disappointed? Let us know in the comments field below.

Wait, so fire rate for all guns with Akimbo will be 50% slower? Then what's the benefit of running Akimbo at all?

Allow me to clarify:
1 x FMG9 = 100% fire rate
2 x FMG9s = 2 x 50% fire rate (100%), plus reduced accuracy and inability to ADS

What a retarded decision. Bravo everyone who moaned about 'imbalances'. Now Akimbo is entirely pointless. It's MW2's 1887 all over again...

The fire rate is the same, but the clip size is effectively 2x, so you could just look at it as a way to change clips less often.

Good point. I suppose my only counter to that would be to use Extended Mags, though the attachment's availability would depend on the weapon rank of whichever pistol/machine pistol you were using.

I don't use Akimbo guns myself because I like to aim down sight, so this patch won't directly affect me. That said, I can imagine the nerfing will upset many. Maybe it would've been better to decrease hip-fire accuracy further? Or perhaps remove Akimbo for machine pistols? I don't know, I'm just spit-balling...

Honestly I would think they should do one or the other, either keep the accuracy the same but decrease the fire rate since you would have to be more careful about aiming, or keep the rate the same but drop accuracy for shooting wild.

Either way I think people would bitch up a storm about it.

Maybe for the people that REALLY like using akimbo there could be a weapon that is really good at it but has less damage? A gun like the P-90 has very little kick, a large clip and is easy to fire one handed. On the down side it is a very light round, so should do less damage to balance things out.

Or you could have the much more expensive option, AA-12

Perhaps they could limit dual wield to pistols and these guns that are stable enough to pull it off in real life?

And sorry about the links, I don't remember how to embed them and I should be working, not posting :)

I like the idea of Akimbo pistols only. As you say, the recoil is stable enough to preserve accuracy over distance, and being single shot they aren't overpowered. You've actually just reminded me of how much I used to love running dual Enforcer handguns on Unreal Tournament back in the day - might get to work on unlocking Akimbo for the USP .45s to scratch that itch...

Perhaps you should submit an application to IW's design team? ;-)

good, now maybe you'll have to use a little skill

The guy didn't say he used them, he was just commenting on the bizarre tweak. I see his point: who in their right mind will use Akimbo now? There's absolutely no benefit.

I don't like Akimbo runners either, but this is stupid.

If girls like you knew learned how to deal with dual-wielders instead of crying about them there wouldn't be an issue.
