Sony Reveals Catastrophic Details Regarding PSN Blackout

Sony has finally revealed the details we’ve all been waiting for and unfortunately they aren’t good. Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media has officially addressed some of the questions consumers and the media have had over the course of the last few days. To view the full statement hit the break.
Patrick Seybold writes: “Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.”
Essentially it looks like someone may have been able to get a hold of everyone’s personal information. This was the nightmare situation everyone was afraid of and now it’s a reality. User should be receiving an email very soon that fully details the issue. This email can be found below:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
- Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
- Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
- Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:
U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.
We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment
This lack of security will no doubt have an effect on consumer confidence, along with the possibility of some lawsuits arising as a result of this cyber attack. Sony has a lot of work ahead of them. Users who are looking for some sort of compensation will be disappointed to hear they will not be receiving any sort of compensation.
In other words, you can’t access your service, your personal information may also have been leaked, and you don’t get a damn thing for the inconvenience. Bravo, Sony! Now everyone can join us in a collective face-palm. To say this issue will have a damaging impact on Sony’s overall reputation would be a understatement. Do you believe your entitled to any sort of compensation? What do you think this will do to Sony’s rep? Let us know in the comment section.

This is beyond bullshit and into fucking ludicrous. There is absolutely no reason for PSN to still be down, let alone until May 31st like they are talking about now.
If you can't get a network secure and back online in LESS than two weeks, THEN YOU ARE JUST FUCKING INCOMPTENT AND SHOULD BE IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT LINE. Sony needs to start firing people from the top down and getting people in there that actually know what they are doing and can get the job done. May 31st is insane. NOTHING IN IT TAKES A MONTH AND A HALF TO FIX, NOTHING.
And who is going to pay for Netflix for the month and a half I don't have access to it? Either start authenticating PSN users for Netflix, or disable the requirement to be signed into PSN to view Netflix content. Authentication is nothing. You can set up authentication servers completely and totally separate from the PSN network with very little effort. It should take a single tech one day, two at the most, to set it up. And the bonus is Sony could claim to have restored partial functionality to PSN, and it would actually look like there was at least a basic level of competence and caring for the customer. In any event, something needs to BE done RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
Quit dragging your ass Sony. Get your shit together, and bring this god damn service back on line.
You're a moron. April 19 - May 12 is not a month and a half. You do have access to netflix, netflix is not owned by sony, you can easily go to the netflix website and watch your movies.

You obviously have no clue to what you are talking about. If you don't understand how something works do not post you're opinion as fact.
quote 2
"In any event, something needs to BE done RIGHT FUCKING NOW."
lmao so nothing is being done? Do you work at sony?
quote 3
"This is beyond bullshit and into fucking ludicrous."
You're mad, cheer up.
quote 4
"There is absolutely no reason for PSN to still be down, ..."
There is plenty reason, you're just not smart enough to figure it out sir.
quote 5
"... ,let alone until May 31st like they are talking about now."
This was a rumor and confirmed untrue by sony in a public release.
Now get out of your little girl PMS mode, and grow up. Go do something with your life rather than throw a temper tantrum because you can't play your game. Or simply put... GET OVER IT. (I can type in caps too :D)
i think they soul find the hacker and fine him to the max so he has nothing left except the f***ing clothes on his back or hers or its. sony should let every user thathas signed up for an account for the playstation store pick 1 free game of there choosing that way all users that were registered before this black out get to pick one item from the online store for free no mater how much this item cost it coukld be game or movie. and they should rlease the hackers name and address so every sony user can go and sue the f**k out of him or her
Its a hacking group, also they wouldn't be fined. They would serve jail time with a minimum of 5 years. Also since hacking is considered worse than killing a human being, they would most likely serve the maximum sentence.
I'd like to be compensated but I don't think Sony should pay. I want the hacker to pay. If he is some broke geek living with his mom, we need to drag him out in the street like a muslim woman who commited adultry and beat his friggin brains in with sticks and rocks.
totally agree u
big f*&king flop on sonys end, in this day and age they should have been prepard this kinda of stuff, another reason why xbox is on top.
im not totally sure but what happened was they made a hack for the psn so they could download anything for free by the hack turning your ps3 into a developer ps3 and if it is a developer ps3 psn doesnt check your credit card info cause your on thier secure server that they trust. so they can use FAKE credit card numbers. they dont want your account info, credit card numbers i dont think. they just brought the credit card numbers in to get the feds involved.
you can still access your netflix while the network is down. Just click on the app and let it load. It will ask you to sign intp the network, do it. It will go to the red netflix loading screen and "Playstaion is curently undergoing maintanance". Now hit back and it willgoto the sign in page again, sign in and the same will happen again. Only this time the full netflix page will be loaded, pick movie and watch. enjoy it
I don't think that anyone is entitled to anything. It is something that happened, it sucks, it is innconvient but its your fault for putting your personal information on the web. Remember that 700 page agreement that we all accepted and read throughly well in there it has things to do with hacking and how we are all shit out of luck.
Map pack yes
i had bough a psn card the day b4 the network being turned off and it didnt work could this of been 9hacking) that it didnt work nd will i b able to use it when it up n running???
when psn goes back up it better be at a better quality..
and its not psn fault it the hackers fault
No, actually it is PSN's fault. They should prepare for this, we all know there are hackers out there and every business should act as though they will be hacked and the personal information of their clients will be taken. This is SONY for Christ's sake, not some mom and pop on the corner. I'm absolutely disgusted and pissed off because this means canceling and closing two credit cards, filing fraud alerts with the three agencies, and changing my security check words, like name of your first pet...all because Sony F'd up.
They should be fined to the max. We should all be paid at retribution. If you don't hurt these companies they won't do anything to protect you. If they knew they would be risking bankruptcy if they were breached you can damn well bet they'd ensure they'd never be breached.
lets all sign a petition demanding we want sony to pay for the next map pack for black ops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont want a game or a movie just have the map pack for free now!
hope psn will be back soon psn rocks!
true dat bro 360 sucks
no psn sucks, thats why it got hacked, no hackin on 360, up and running and puttin psn in the DUST........
genius 360 was down for 2 weeks about 2 years ago. they got hacked too. 360 isnt better. u just have to pay a yearly fee just to play games. thats retarded
maybe they didn't hack the xbox cuse it would be a wast of there time
maybe they didn't hack the xbox cuse it would be a wast of there time
when will it be back im so bored its officially 1 week OMFG
lets all sign a petition demanding we want sony to pay for the next map pack for black ops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont want a game or a movie just have the map pack for free now!
YEAH! FREE MAP PACKS! WHOO!
The map pack is more a thing the company that makes Black Ops makes money off of not Sony. So it would make no sense to get that for free. Im sure Sony gets some percentage of the map pack earnings but that would hurt Activision more than Sony and its NOT Black Ops fault its Sonys lack of security.
when will it actually be back up and running ??????????????????????????????????????????????????//
From what ive been hearing they are saying it will be up to a week from yesterday. So basically your looking at another 5-7 days of not having the ability to play online.
Wow. just fuckin wow. I bought my ps3 a few months ago because my mom died and i needed something new to take my mind off shit, and now this happens.
I am probably going to return it. I am super disappointed, and angry that I call 2 days after the blackout, to make sure my info had not been accessed and they assured me that it was merely servers down and that my info was NOT at all tampered with.
WTF SONY?
I guess who ever said it was right, im an idiot for using my credit card on PSN. I trusted them to secure my info.
I have definitely learned my lesson.
You really cant trust anyone.
I despise the people who did this. Thanks a lot for ruining this for me and so many others.
wtf are you whining about, havent you read there updates, they needed experts from outside their company to verify what was, and wasnt stolen, would you have preferred them to say 7 different things in 7 days or a solid confirmation after 7 days, and you can still play games, you don't need online gameplay to take your mind off things, and you should probably process the loss of your mother rather than playing games
People like you should be takin out in the street and beatin. Dont tell another person how to deal with a loss like that you fuckin faggot.
That sux man im sorry to hear about your mom and it is bullshit they didnt take anywhere near the steps to protect peoples information. All i can say is cancel the credit card, keep the PS3, and only use the PSN gift cards you can buy at Game Stop or Best Buy. The system itself is a great system its just the rich money hungry deauchbags that run the company suck big fuckin balls.
Its not SONY's fault (if your credit card info gets hacked). If after this you continue to use your credit card online then it's only your own fault. BEWARE!
Are you kidding. of course it is Sonys fault. They have let a hacker get into their own system and access private information belonging to every PS owner who is registered with Sony. They can put up whatever excuse they want in regards to the current situation but it certainly will not take away the fact that SONY did not do enough to protect our privacy.
You're an idiot.
Of course it is Sony's fault. It's their responsibility to keep that information secure. And what does using a credit card online have to do with anything?
This breach has NOTHING to do with online transactions; it has to do with network security and database storage procedures. Have you ever actually used a credit card? When a clerk swipes the card through that machine, the transaction is recorded and stored on a database, where it is processed and then transmitted to the credit card company, where it is stored on a database and then processed and billing information is gathered, then it is transmitted to the card issuer who, guess what?, stores it on a database and sends it to their billing department, who stores it on a database, sends you a bill, and sends it to their payment processor, who stores it, wait for it…, on a database, and waits for your check. And if you don't pay it, they send it to a collection agency, who, once again, stores it on a database. Are you seeing a pattern yet? I mean honestly, what do you think happens when they swipe your card? Do you think there is someone on the other side of the wall that writes it down and then uses pony express and a strong box? A single transaction in a restaurant or at a store lands your credit card, and personal information on a half dozen databases at least, and any one of those companies are susceptible to exactly this kind of breach, but luckily most companies employ security measures to prevent massive data breaches. Apparently Sony does not.
So once again, how is this not Sony's fault, and what does using a credit card online have to do with anything?
Bravo
hey but guess what, everytime any company builds a new security software..There will always be some genius wizkid hacker that can beat that new "Super security network"...my point is that if a group of hackers wants to they can,get over it hacking will never end..every system has some weakness and if someone with the proper know wants to they can wreck it...for fucks sake the GOVERMENT computers have been hacked
Wow! You really, and truly, are an idiot. Or 12.
ok, firstly ps3 fucks xbox
secondly xbox online fucks ps3 online
and last but not least ps3 still fucks xbox
GGxD :) love you
all i want is too be able to play black ops zombies again i want no compensation although it would be nice but still anything to help speed up this process i will happily agree to ( within reason >,> ) and yes i may not have a life but you know what i go to school i got a hot gf and i honestly wanna just be able to play some ps3 online with my friends any1 stickin with ps3 and has a mic/bluetooth add me i am cancerouscandie
just hope all is fixed, nobody's identity is stolen, and that Playstation arises stronger than ever. This does suck and some type of compensation would be nice (free movie or downloadable game) but theres really nothing we can do about it. Fuck xbox, long live PS
Yea FUCK XBOX yeaaa, but i am feeling a little stupid with all this bullshit goin on. Im loyal, i will stay with the PS3. Im just pissed how this whole shit went down man they got all our password and shit what the hell?
Yes its Sony fault that they did not protect the integrity of their system (free or not). Plus there are people who pay to play online but cannot take DC universe online as an example.
Sony should pay all users a prorated cost for the downtime and the costs associated with this.
if my internet service or cable or satellite service goes down they give me a prorated discount on my next billing cycle.
Sony should do the same.
its FREE dumb ass
ITS NOT TOTTALY FREE YOUR A DUMBASS
what do you pay for?
Playstation plus i think costs 50 bucks for a whole year. Qriocity is a music and video download engine idk how much it costs but im sure its a monthly fee. Netflix. And if you play any game that comes with a monthly fee like DC universe that cost $15 a month.
I used to be a full hearted sony playstation guy but between the CRAPPY i,m being polite service on my old ps 3 then their update that bricked it totally my fault its a hardware problem the say yes it was i should have never bought it lol then all the updates that do nothing but cut out all my ps3 software aka linux etc and now this what next they going to recall all ps3s and give us dic even the new wii is starting to look good compared to this great sony product i was so happy to get ...
not so sincerly one x sony fan
damn get that dildo out of your ass, they got hacked so what, wait till they fix it and you can play again, or do you have nothing else to do than sit on a chair playing videogames 24/7, ofcourse it sux we can't play, but really, theres better things to do in real life aswell
First of all, it IS Sony's fault. If they had better security for their network this would not have happened. Playstation network has been down for a week now, how many people does it take to get it back up and running. I have been a PS3 fan since the first PS system came out. After playing Xbox online Iv realized XBox out does PSN any day of the week and twice on sunday. Yes, Xbox charges $5 a month, BUT would you rather pay $5 a month to have lag free, hack free online game experience or would you rather not pay anything and be subject to intrusions, hacking, and like we see now a week without online gaming. How long does it take for you to get your act together PSN???? You would think being a multi-billion dollar company that it wouldnt take you a week to get your shit together.
