NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat remake needs...

Tag: Mortal Kombat

It’s been a while since I wrote my last article - for two reasons: one, the job that pays my bills has been unendingly demanding, and two I’ve spent the little free time I do get lately button-bashing my way through NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat reboot. By all accounts, the developer’s revival of this classic arcade beat ‘em up is faithful and brilliant but I, an MK veteran and franchise follower, feel two things are missing.

Said ‘two’ was originally three, as to me Rain’s omission from MK 2011’s character roster was a big disappointment. Thankfully, Executive Producer Ed Boon realised that the MK universe needs a purple ninja, and confirmed in Skarlet’s story trailer (fast forward to 01:32) that he’ll arrive as DLC this summer, along with Kenshi and '???'. Happy face.

But, even so, I can’t help but long for the inclusion of two small gameplay elements:

Animalities

The Animality debuted in MK 3, and allowed the fight's victor to morph into an animal and maim their opponent. Gruesome.

Friendships

Introduced in MK II to counter all the blood and gore, players could choose to spare the life of their adversary and perform a silly act instead. Not gruesome, but entertaining regardless.

Do I think MK 2011 is broken without them? Absolutely not. However, if Boon finds himself struggling for downloadable content ideas in the future, I would be among the first to propose their inclusion.

Would you?
