Eurogamer Hands On: Street Fighter x Tekken

Having played a good number of matches of Street Fighter x Tekken at the EuroGamer Expo recently, the overwhelming feeling that I got from my experience was that this game is a mix of all of Capcom's previous beat-em-up outings.
Street Fighter x Tekken combines elements utilized in the Marvel vs Capcom series, Street Fighter IV, and even from older classics like the Alpha series. By combining all these different elements, it creates a completely new experience, meaning fans of particular franchises will all have an adjustment period to learn the game's mechanics.
Although the game uses the same graphical style as Street Fighter IV, it looks sharper, with character models seeming more refined and detailed.
The game employs a three-punch, three-kick input system, but utilizes Marvel vs Capcom's light-medium-heavy mechanic to chain combos and tag-combos. Because the Tekken characters have no projectile moves, this game focuses very much on close-quarters combat, in which specials are rarely used by players, opting instead for quick two- or three-hit combos before bringing in your partner. This can be both fun and frustrating, as all the player can do to block these chains of punches and kicks is block, but the game would benefit from a more effective counter system, or, more controversially, the parry system implemented in Street Fighter III: Third Strike.
The most controversial new feature of this game is Pandora mode, in which characters can sacrifice one of their fighters, leaving the other with increased power and infinite supers for a limited time. Speaking to some of the other players, this has been a very unwelcome addition, which, after gamers try once, rarely use again. There simply isn't enough time for players to defeat their opponent's whilst in Pandora mode, and because their is not a "Guard Break" mechanic, the opponent can simply block and run away until the timer runs out.
Clearly, there are some tweaks to be made for the game, and equally, there is a learning curve for both new players and veterans alike. But with the game scheduled for an unspecified 2012 release, there is plenty of time for both to happen.
