GDC 2010: New Trailer For Brink

Things really look like it is going to be a busy year all the way through, especially with the folks at Bethesda bringing out Brink. This FPS, just in case those who don't know what this is about, is essentially cross between Mirror's Edge and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 where the players are able to switch roles during gameplay i.e. Assault front-liner switching to support Engineer. As for the storyline, there are breadcrumbs being fed at the moment but the general feel is a futuristic city where parts of it has fallen into disrepair and generally the gap between the rich and poor become more apparent. Guess what, the people don't like it and decide to take up arms against the rich.

So here is the quick rundown on all gameplay seen so far, the storyline is playable both offline and online as well. Whether there will be online players on the opposition remains to be seen but if that is possible, the different outcomes for the storyline will really open up. The game uses something called SMART which stands for Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain. So in addition to the traditional controllers, you are able to take different routes round various obstacles such as security metal detectors. So far the player movement using this system seems to be okay. The game also uses the standardised experience points for FPS games now which is no surprise when the game offers character customization. This aspect of the game seems to offer different types of gameplay experiences i.e. if the character has a bulky build, it's more likely that he will be an Assault operative. Generally you will get the idea and the designs for both factions look really different but suited to each role assigned.

The designs for the different levels shown so far look like you can really go anywhere and get to a certain point on the map via any route possible. There isn't much to go on audio at the moment but the sounds used for the guns suited them from the light quick fire round of a sub-machine to heavy thunderous rounds being shot by a sentry gun. Overall this game looks and feels like a breath of fresh air for the FPS scene since we are surrounded by constant warfare games like MW 2 or BFBC 2 but don't get me wrong those are great games in their own right. Keep an eye out for this game's development.
