My Thoughts: Call of Duty 4

Well, I’ve been thinking about all the complaints in the COD4 Update thread (2 posts down from this one), and I think you should all give it a rest. I know that you wanna play your game online, and you paid good money for it – the thing is, you paid the money for the game, not for their servers. You own the game, you can not control their servers, and their servers overloaded because of the Christmas Sales Window (CSW, as I’m now gonna call it). The CSW is when loadsa people get presents (obviously), so when all these people get COD4 (which has obviously happened), the server goes ‘holy-crap’ and fizzles out, because it simply can’t handle so many connections.

Think about it, it’s not their fault that their servers couldn’t handle the unexpected spike – sure, they could’ve paid more money to handle more requests than they’ll ever need – but they’re business men. Why should they spend such money when they don’t need it?

And it’s not just the PS3 version of COD4 that’s breaking down online,  the 360 version is too, and so is XBLA (or so I heard), so don’t try to blame this on PSN, either.

I’m sure that they’re doing something about the servers being so screwed at the moment (the patch, for example – which is going to be released soon anyway, a mere couple of weeks after the problems started, which is very impressive), so just wait, and play single player – it’s awesome anyway, and it’ll give you practice (which you’ll need, there’s always somebody better than you, remember). Now stop complaining and go shoot some AI players if you can’t get online. I’ll just go play Warhawk.

  1. I completely disagree with you. When you purchase game that states it has on-line play, you are paying for their servers. You are not getting your money’s worth if the servers are not available.

It all comes down to poor planning by the developer. They should be able to forecast sales for the “CSW”, as you put it, project the increase in on-line activity, and ramp-up their servers accordingly.

But as you said, “I will just go play Warhawk”–which I believe is the most under rated PS3 title.

  2. I disagree as well – you blame the server problems on the “CSW” but I was having serious connection problems before christmas. I usually have to wait somewhere between 15 and 45 minutes to join one game which usually ends up being cancelled after I’ve played the first match.

I know it’s not my connection settings because I have tried all the fixes suggested and I have no trouble connecting to warhawk and singstar online as well as the PSN and any online demo’s.

  3. I agree.
As long as they correct the problem, I’ts ok.
And the problem is solved. Yesterday I had no problems.

  4. I can not honestly see how you could think that the holiday spike was UNEXPECTED.
Is CoD4 the first online game ever made? No.
Oh wait, maybe this was the first Christmas. Not even close.
Well then it would have to be the first time that the two have existed at the same time! Uh…no.
All companies plan on the big holiday sales rush, this is a given. So with that in mind, how can you try to defend the CoD4 staff and say that the spike was UNEXPECTED?
I agree that people should move on to another game until all the problems are resolved. I would also agree that there has been a fairly rapid response to the server issues ( aside from the Christmas down time). I disagree though with your thoughts on people should stop complaining.
If nobody complains and keeps on complaining, then there is going to be no true sense of urgency. If my wife complains one time about the leaking faucet I will hear her but soon forget as I get caught up with all of the other things going on in life. The faucet still works just not to standard and I will forget because I am too busy painting the house or fixing the car or playing CoD4 or whatever. The point is simple, we as consumers can not allow a company to put out a defective product and not say something about it.
I agree that the single player campaign is loads of fun, but for some, the short campaign was just a training mission to get them ready for online. Now that we have had a taste of online life, we don’t want to go back to being alone.
CoD4 is not the first game to have online play, not by a long shot. So the issues that they are having should never have happend. I understand that there are some things that can not be controlled or avoided but server overload, should not be one of them.
And with that I end my rant.

  5. Alright, you’re part right, you should notify them of the problem in some way, complaining works, but when millions of people post all over the internet about how the game is crap and a waste of money, they’re gonna trade it in for something else and such because their servers are down, that’s just melodramatic.

And if you ask me, for the servers for a game than runs lag-free, fast and fun, it must’ve been a huge spike. Some things just can’t be predicted, and they’re fixing it anyway – you seem to forget that the people who make the games are human too, and mistakes happen. Granted, there should be less mistakes, and there ARE – hence why COD4 is so good – so just wait for the update.

  6. I agree with you that people are taking the complaining too far. But the “millions” of people who are complaining are frustrated and tired of waiting for an update. If you look at my final paragraph, you see that I concede the fact that there are some things that can not be controlled or avoided. I Just think that in this day and age, with all of the games that came before it, Cod4 should be running smoother and have fewer problems than it does.
The latest update, did not seem to help much, at least not for me and the people in my clan (who are spread from coast to coast). It still takes us at least two or three tries to get into a game. When we do get into a game, the same ol connection interruped problem occurs on regular occasion.
I am not wanting to argue with you because it is obvious that we share some same thoughts on the issue, I just feel that you are taking it easy on them.

  7. Why didnt XBOX LIVE have all of these problems?
Well at least the Bluray battle is working out?

  8. Did you read the article. I’ve read that the XBLA is having the same problems – in the game AND just XBLA itself, so…

  9. lol yeah right you think cod 4 has problems have any of you tried playing need for speed pro street…. it seems i have more problems with that than any one and ea have given up on me….
on that thought other ea games are shit on line as well like fight night and as for medal of honor thats a joke…. and tiger woods kept kicking me out on the 3rd hole and that did get trown off the balconey pile of shit…. good game online was shit…..

  10. Nice article, but just bogus. March now and 2 or 3 updates later: still connection failures.
The excuse of too many people seems grabbed from thin air, same as saying that they provide free servers so we should just stop complaining.
Let us pay then just like XBOX; but hey, shoot, they have the same problem !!

People payed good money for the game, and expect that is runs good. Sony promotes that it’s internet service is Free, so in that case we can also complain when things are not working.

The next update will fix it? I give you a million $ it won’t. Maybe just wait for summer time and hope everybody is outdoor so I can play indoor and have value for money with 3 players online :)
