More details on Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

NFS Hot Pursuit

If you’re anything like me you will have been keeping a close eye on Criterion Games’ Twitter page since Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was officially revealed at this year’s E3 Expo. The British developer, world-renowned for the highly-successful Burnout series, is on track to restore the Need for Speed franchise to its former, pre-Underground glory, and naturally fans are desparate to find out all they can prior to the game’s November release. Over the last few days, the company’s Tweets have let some, um, 'most wanted' details slip (see what I did there?).

For the uninformed among you, here’s a brief synopsis of what we've learned:

  • Like Burnout Paradise, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit will be an open-world game, just bigger and better! Chases will take place all over the game’s map, not on predetermined routes
  • There will be no options to tune or upgrade the game’s cars. Similarly, visual customisation will be very limited
  • Most if not all cars will be exotic by classification, though unfortunately Ferrari will not be appearing in the manufacturer line-up (at time of writing, anyway. The same was said about NFS: Shift, and look what happened there)
  • Hot Pursuit will feature two individual campaigns of almost equal length, one for the police and one for the criminal
  • The custom soundtrack feature will be supported (“take me down to the paradise city, where the grass is gr... sorry, wrong game!)
  • Multiplayer modes will be online-only. There will be no split-screen mode
  • A cockpit viewpoint will not be available

It is promised that information about Hot Pursuit’s game types will follow soon so keep checking your rear-views, so to speak.

The only thing putting me off is no cockpit view in ANY car. At least if it was like gran turismo 5 which they say will have premeum (will have more detailed int eriors cars will not have cockpit views) that would be a better system

Good to know. I myself am UK-based, though I'm sure one of our US writers will pick this up.

Thanks again for the tips.

Just because I stopped writing for you doesn't mean that I won't help with information.

Anyways, any information you don't find, I'll be sure to have, when it gets closer to the release date, you'll get some major news.

On a side note, EA and Criterion are hosting a NFS:HP Tour Party where they will be stopping in Seven different American cities demoing the game at large events, starting July 14.

If you're in one of the cities, I suggest that you register and attempt to participate in an epic run toward the release date.

Stops include NY, Chicago, Seattle, San Fran, Austin, Miami, and Los Angeles.

More information regarding this would be available
http://www.needforspeed.com/post/hot-pursuit-goes-tour

*Most likely the Demo's will be on PS3, as that was the E3 game revealing platform.

Just a couple rectifications:

Nearly all the cars will be available as Pursuit and Racer models. With the exception of some specific exclusions such as the Porsche Cayenne, etc.

NFS1-6 is the roots they're talking about, more specifically though Road and Track presents The Need For Speed on the 3DO.

The Hot Pursuit Map is regarded to have over 100 miles of road, which is more than four times larger than the map in Burnout Paradise.

Ferrari will likely NOT have anything to do with Hot Pursuit 2010, since licensing has changed since 2001. Microsoft (Xbox) and Ferrari have an exclusive deal. Also like Honda, Ferrari do not like their cars depicted in such activities such as police chases, again changed since 2001, when Ferrari has a total of 3 (ps2 or 2 on PC/Xbox) cars in Special Delivery Challenges.

Cheers on your update good work keeping an eye on the twitter.

@ Cdot:
Yeah, that's a bit of a sore point with me too to be honest, but then customisation was limited in Burnout Paradise and I really enjoyed that.

Maybe if the gameplay's as good as it looks customisation won't be missed.
