Metacritic Declares PS3 Platform of the Year
Well, Metacritic has officially confirmed what all of us have known, well, since Day 1 of the PS3 but the world is now realizing. If you want the top gaming experience, get yourself a PS3. If you want a system Grandma can play with her bridge club, get a Wii and if you want a nice little red circle to match the Christmas decorations, get that console from Microsoft.
Using factors such as game score, MetaCritic has placed Sony’s PlayStation atop their first annual Game Platform Power Rankings. Quoting – “Although Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher), and though Nintendo’s Wii had the largest total number of releases (a whopping 362, or almost one per day), the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”.
“The popular Wii platform had a poor year in terms of game quality, with critics liking just 28% of games released for the platform,” the site added. (Editor’s note: Did they ask AARP?).

I own both a PS3 and an XBOX 360 (That has never red ringed) and XBOX is far and away more advanced when it comes to online. It’s more integrated and streamlined, and much easier to gather my friends all up in one game than it is on PSN, which takes forever just to get everyone in the same game, on the same team. PS3 has a long way to go in developing their online gaming to catch up with 360, but other than that it is a great machine.
How many times have you replaced your XBOX?
I’m on my 3rd xbox in 3 years. RROD everytime. I like my PS3 more. Blu-ray, wireless, free online. ’nuff said.
I don’t what this guy is talking about all you gotta do is meet up with ur friends on ps home and game launch from there everyone gets a spot and you can even reserve the game for just you and ur friends long way to go my ass! This reminds me of the ignorance and underappreciation towards metal until quiet riot got #1 on the billboards then everyone realized how great metal (PS3) actually was.
I own both consoles too and my Xbox360 did a red light on me twice. Even if it hadn’t gotten a red light, the thought of it possibly happening brings the fun out of playing. Just got the PS3 slim last October, and having a great time with MW2 (I still do get to play on the 360 sometimes)
As I said, I’m not ignorant, I know exactly what I’m talking about seeing as I own both a PS3 and Xbox 360 and have played them both online with friends. My Xbox has never RRODed but I’ve had friends who have had it happen to them. I know it’s an issue, not denying that. PS3’s hardware is much better than 360’s.
And you pretty much proved my point Antman. go to home, get your friends to go to home, meet up, and launch into a game. Sure it’s fairly simple to do that, but by the time you’ve got all your friends in PS home, my friends and I have been in an Xbox live party for a solid minute and are probably already in game. No matter how you look at it, Xbox has a more integrated online because it’s more functional in the dash board. Granted Xbox Live has had a lot longer time to develop and a fee to pay for developments, but I do hope PSN gets there.
Besides, if Xbox Live wasn’t good, how come PSN is constantly updating their functionality to be on par with Live’s? I even read an article a while back where a Sony guy directly referenced wanting to make PSN more like Live.
Antman, you need step off your high horse. I am not a 360 fanboy, or a PS3 fanboy. I like them both! They both have their pros and cons, just like anything else. I think PS3 takes the cake in every category except online functionality, and judging by the amount of people who play MW2 online on 360 vs PS3, I can’t be the only one who thinks that.
So don’t sling words like ignorance and under appreciation in my direction. I’m far from ignorant, and considering I was one of the first people in my area to get a PS3, I’d say I’m pretty appreciative of what Sony has given.
Xbox Live Gamertag: GutsNGloryG
PS3: HellblazerG
Add me if you want.
I think most Xbox fanboys miss the point. Yes, Xbox has a better online experience, after all they started the whole online multiplayer experience for a game consoles back with Xbox, Sony has been playing catch up ever since. Also you pay $50 a year for that experience and it hasn’t cost me a dime yet to go online with the PSN. If the Xbox Live experience was worse then a free service, then I would have been outraged, but I always expect more if I pay for something over something that is free.
But this article is about the quality of the games and I don’t care how easier it is to gather up friends and go online if the games you are playing are not very good.
Also, I don’t think the PS3 is slouching on online connectivity either. I never found it particularly difficult to go online with R2 or CoD:MW or any other games with a bunch of friends, half the time they are alredy in the game and I just join their parties, and Home is a far better online community then anything from Microsoft in terms of richness and possibilities.
All I will give to the Xbox360 is a tighter integration of online for multiplayer games, thats it. But then the PC has far better online connectivity then any game console and MOST of the “exclusive” titles for the Xbox360 come out on the PC too, so I find that the PS3 is overall the best game console for differentiating itself from a PC and having far more and much better games you can’t find anywhere else, and that was the point of this article.
Maybe Microsoft might take some of their Live money and re-invest it in some good “real” exclusive games in 2010. The same thing is happening with the Xbox360 as with the original Xbox, the Playstation platform has more exclusives and better quality games while the Xbox is flogging mostly cross platform titles.
@G Your right but I wasn’t directing the ignorance towards you but to the xbox fanboys who don’t understand that the ps3 hardware is far greater than the xbox’s but online is still an issue but I’m sure psn will get there anyways ps3 had a great year 2009 with the release of the slim, the sales that finally beat 360, and uncharted 2 winning game of the year on spike’s VGA’s I think a lot of people will be getting a ps3 this Christmas.
I have a ps3 and I do admit the online can be frustrating at times, but I have no experience of live so I can’t compare, as for game releases there aren’t many greater exclusive releases on either platform, I work in a game shop and the only release I wish was on ps3 was left4dead, apart from that everyone can play COD and assasins creed etc etc, forza looks good but then again cran turismo is out next year, plus I think this survery is flawed, there are more games on xbox which surely brings the score down purely through averages??
@Antman: My apologies then, I assumed it was directed at me. You know how the net is mate. =P
MW 2, Madden 10, UFC Undisputed are all great on Xbox 360, so I don’t see how you say the games I’m playing online aren’t very good, Topher. In fact, having owned UFC Undisputed on PS3 and Xbox 360, I can tell you that it is smoother (both gameplay and online play) on 360.
I’ll agree 100% that Sony has better console titles. Hell, I’m not arguing that. Never was. The whole reason I got a PS3: MGS4 and GoW3.
My point is, I don’t need to run around in PS home. I just want to easily talk with my friends, join my friends games, and remain in parties across separate games so we can still chat no matter what or who we’re playing. In my last post I even stated that Xbox Live has the advantage of time and a monthly payment, but I still think it is THE best online experience right now. I have both, I’ve experienced both, and this is mine and many other’s opinions.
Do I think PSN will catch up? I really hope so, because at this point when an online game comes out, it’s really a no-brainer what console I’m getting it for. The only reason I even have a 360 is for the online, because that’s what everyone plays online ( for good reason). When I went to the launch night of MW2 at my local store, there were what looks like hundreds of copies of MW2 for 360 stacked up in multiple rows on a table behind the desk. The PS3 stack? I’m not even joking when I say it had to be less than 15 copies. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that’s definitive evidence of Xbox 360’s online dominance, but it’s gotta say something.
In short: I think Xbox Live is better right now, I hope PSN catches up one day.
