Medal of Honour: Airborne Reviewed

I haven’t posted for a week (apologies) because I have playing a new game, one I shall present to you in the shortest review I could write.

So I received Medal of Honour: Airborne, and it is interesting to say the least, but let me delve a bit deeper into the depths of the game design, gameplay and entertainment levels.

I like the innovative use of the PlayStation 3 controller (SIXAXIS) and I certainly like the parachuting and some of the newer game play elements that were introduced into the game. But I still have this feeling, overshadowing me as I play, that this is better suited for a computer, using PC controls. Maybe this is an absurd thing for me to say, and that I only feel this due to my childhood spent playing FPS games on a computer. Nevertheless, it prevented me from enjoying the game to the fullest and I can only assume this is something that is limited to me personally.

Call of Duty, works really well on the PS3, but I get this strange feeling and lack of ability to control accurately in Medal of Honour, despite this, like everything, it is something that can be overcome, controlled and something I can learn. Technically the controls are not that different.

So putting that aside, graphics are decent. They are not amazing, but they are not poor either. It won’t “wow” you as such, but maybe it shouldn’t. I’d rather emphasis be on something like gameplay.

Gameplay is new to me, the whole campaign based way of doing things, rather than a run through of story was something I did throughout the 90’s and it feels linear. Though that isn’t bad. I’ll admit, I enjoyed it, but I ended up getting fed up easily. As soon as you get into the whole game, time does fly, however.

Level design is rather good too, it feels authentic and it is entertaining. It is a clearly more complicated game than Call of Duty, which I am using as a reference point, being as that is still a high ranking and modern game. The levels are rather large too, at least in single player which increases the time it takes to finish and enjoyment levels go up immensely.

As for story and plot, I enjoyed Call of Duty’s much more, but it isn’t terrible, it is a simple run-through WW2 history sort of game; something that is to be expected really, and yet again, lacks originality, but I’m sure it is meant to.

I’m not entirely happy with the game, it is what I would say is moderately entertaining at first, but it grows on you like a leech. A fun leech, that is. Though it does also earn brownie points for online play, which is a lot more fun.

I would recommend you buy this game, it does get fun in single player and there is a story-line, even if not solid. If you like FPS and/or WW2 based games, you will enjoy this, no doubt. And even if you’re not that bothered, it is worth it for the multiplayer. Just don’t add this game to the top of your most wanted list unless you have someone else to play with.

  1. If the graphics in a game where you must jump out of a plane at the beginning of every level don’t manage to wow you there’s something seriously wrong.

  2. I’ll admit that bit is pretty cool.
