Jack Tretton Interview. New controller coming?
Gametrailers.com has put up an interview with Jack Tretton of Sony regarding various issues. After the settlement with Immersion, Sony appears to be open to adding new function to their SIXAXIS controller. When asked about possible changes to the controller, Jack Tretton replied ?We used to have a narrow approach to controllers. If you really wanted to [move outside the standard controller], we left it up to third party manufacturers. But now we're moving to a regional approach. You will see peripherals coming from SCEA that will address the interests of the U.S. consumer. I don't have anything to tell you specifically, but we're certainly open to changing the Sixaxis controller if it addressed North American gamers.? Of course, the ?narrow? approach was most likely due to the lawsuit brought on by Immersion. I?m not sure if there is more demand for rumble function in certain region of the world.
Jack Tretton was asked what he thought of PS3 as of February. Tretton stated that there is perceived lack of interest in PS3. In reality, PS3 has reached 1 million mark faster than PS2. He feels that resale market on Ebay.com is the testament of PS3?s popularity. ?In reality, the fact that people were paying thousands of dollars for the PS3 on eBay supports the message that they see the value in it and they want it.
One other interesting topic was the upscaling of existing PS1 and PS2 to support 720P and beyond. Sony has already announced that DVD movies would receive upscaling through PS3. However, the game is entirely different beast according to Tretton. The PS3 will not automatically upscale PS1 and PS2 games. The game developers will have to spend resource and time to enhance the graphics on the old games. So basically the answer would be NO. I doubt game companies will spend time and effort to make older games look pretty instead of devoting more resources on new PS3 games.
