Insomniac Chief - “PS3 Games will continue to excel”
Brain Hastings, Chief Executive Officer at Insomniac Games, has stated that he believes gamers can expect significant leaps in the visual quality of PlayStation 3 games over the years three or four years.
Speaking to website videogamer.com, Hasting stated, “We’re already seeing a big leap in what people are able to do with the PS3 now compared to a year ago, and we’re going to see just as big a leap between now and the end of 2008.â€
“I think we’re going to continue seeing major leaps each year in what people are able to do with the machine for at least three or four more years.”
Hastings also discussed the company’s efforts with the PS3 title Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and its accomplishments at progressing with the consoles architecture compared to last year.
“The amount of action we’re able to put on the screen at 60 frames per second really dwarfs what we were able to do a year ago at 30 frames per second,” he said.
“What’s most exciting is the way things are headed right now I think we’ll see just as big a leap from our second generation engine to our third as we did from the first to second.”
“Collision and physics are entirely running on SPUs now, which allows us to put much more on the screen at once than we were able to with Resistance. Moving more and more code to the SPUs is an ongoing process and I think we’ll continue to see major benefits from this for several more years.”

Graphics much better than Resistance? *Perks a brow* WHAT CHU TALKIN’ ‘BOUT, MAN? I WANNA SEE! O-O!
I’d like to give my background before I post anything.
I’ve been a big fan of almost ALL systems since my first Atari 2600… then NES.. then Sega Genesis Then PS1 .. then N64 and then PS2 then Xbox.. and then my PSP (which I still love and use for almost everything.. movies, music, and remote play) .. and now my PS3.
Xbox 360 Came out first and to be honest I REALLY wanted one when it did.. This was of course before the known “Ring of Death” plague that continues on.
I recently worked at a Local Gamestop as an assistant manager and this happened right around the time I got my PS3. I was also able to hear about many things that the average consumer does not. To be honest when I started (August of 2007) I noticed the lack of wall space the PS3 section took up in comparison to our 360 mega wall… but I also noticed that the store manager was an xbox360 junkie (not to mention a complete tool) and that may have played a part.
.. On to my actual POINT:
I made friends with ALL of the sales reps that come into the store. These are regional representatives for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. The Nintendo rep knew her shit but she was also a bitch… but all that being said the wii is still an innovative console that in certain ways cant be compared with the other two systems (i.e. doesn’t even play DVDs) The Microsoft rep was a really cool guy, as well as the Sony rep. I learned a TON from these reps. I mostly learned how “freakin sweet and awesome” Halo 3 was going to be (if your system didn’t crash first) and all about Mass effect and Bioshock.. Which I must say are great games… BUT this topic is about game QUALITY so let’s move on to my focus.. SPACE! PS3 games that are multi platform (i.e. Oblivion, assassins creed, etc) tend to take up 3-15 gigs more room on average then their 360 counterparts. That basically means while the game engines and physics pretty much stay the same, the amount/quality of the textures and lighting available on the disks is MUCH more on the ps3 which to me (and my 1080p HD LCD) means a TON more quality… especially when you consider that it is the SAME game dynamics just at a better visual capacity.
For example. Those who say Oblivion runs the same on both consoles must not realize that there is a LARGE graphical difference. The PS3 version runs at a top-level PC equivalent and the 360 has to make sure all of those textures fit onto less than 10 gigs. Hence the reason that if you wan the GOTY edition you need to load the SEPARATE shivering isles disc onto your Hard Drive or download it there. People also complained of glitches such as landscapes and items “popping up” due to being loaded slowly and various coding glitches.
And to even suggest that a game could be better on the 360 makes no sense. We are talking about a system with scaled-down pc parts that weren’t even originally designed to come with an HDMI output.. and with the lack of disc space (not even the full 9.4 gigs a dual-layer DVD comes with… more like 7) why would you even WANT to put that lack of data onto a quality screen. All that would do is point out the imperfections.
One can argue that right now there are MANY more games on the 360 and there is absolutely nobody dumb enough to argue… the issue is that (like mentioned above) there are few QUALITY games percentage wise compared to the PS3. I can’t tell you how many copies of fucking LOST PLANET and TWO WORLDS came back to us as “trade ins” due to how crappy the game was.. I mean one could just go on and on with the amount of crap games.. saints row (fun for like 5 minutes.. until you realize it’s a crap GTA rip-off) Blue Dragon, Vampire Rayne, etc. Now HALO 3 is a tremendous game but they couldn’t even get the packaging right for the limited editions.. 43% of the ones we sold (actual figure) came back to the store because of the dislodged discs being scratched up…. and I don’t know who’s idea the LIMITED EDITIONS were… 130 bucks for the SAME FUCKING GAME and a helmet???
Before I submit this comment I also want to be fair and mention that even though everyone rags on the ring of death epidemic (and rightfully so) M$ did do a better job with the later pro systems that were released in the fall. They even included and HDMI (as if the lack of 1080p graphics warranted that) and changed the “innards” - as the rep so eloquently put - to be much less heat conductive and less faulty. I also thought it was nice to see M$ extend the warranty to 3 years for all the crap systems they shipped out… the only problem is that while you wait the 1+ month for your system to come back, you lose that time you paid for in your Xbox live subscription.
… and you know what? FUCK IT, I’m going to mention another thing people seem to overlook in these forums. PRICE! Yes, the PS3 is much more expensive than the Xbox console itself… but if you want to try and get the XBOX to be even CLOSE to the PS3’s capabilities you need to spend close to 200 bucks MORE than for all the add-on crap. that’s 100 bucks just for the fucking wireless adapter (WTF? My warless router was less than 1/2 that). Then IF you want the lesser of the two HD formats you have to buy a 200$ Dongle.. yes DONGLE of an EXTERNAL drive (which by the way takes up ANOTHER of your 3 USB ports) and you can’t even utilize this for gaming.. so you are STILL stuck with your 7 Gigs of gaming space. Even with ALL of this you STILL don’t compare to the power of the PS3 and what it will be not just now but in the years to come. Someone compared the PS3 to the Dreamcast saying it would be a paperweight soon… personally I think the power-brick of a power cable that nearly outweighs the HD-DVD external drive.
No comparison really..
