In Game XMB Coming Soon (Rumor)

One of the biggest problems with the PlayStation Network is the lack of in game XMB. However, this much requested feature may be coming this summer.

In an interview with MCV UK, Ray Maguire, Managing Director at Sony Computer Entertainment UK praised retailers and dropped some hints about in game XMB. “Achieving one million PS3 sales faster than both PSOne and PlayStation 2 is even more gratifying considering PS3 is a premium product introduced at a premium price.”

As one would expect, Maguire was excited about the future of the console. “Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios.”

“I’d personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey,” he concluded.

So what do you think sports fans? What other features would you like to see. The good people at Sony read this blog so who knows, your comments may just influence the next version of the firmware (and on a personal note, please, please, please allow us to block those annoying twerps that play music in the background or take phone calls while playing online. And a “Please learn to talk real trash, not just demonstrate that you can string eight swear words together” automatic message would be helpful too).

  1. Yes, blocking the annoying background noise such as babies crying for dad, and 12 year olds who think they can cuss, would be sweet! DOnt think it was to be original part of game. COD4 for instance.. nuthin better than hearing a woman yellin at boyfriend to feed the damn kid in the middle of a fire fight! :>

  2. Mike,

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had more “insights” into peoples’ home lives than I ever care to during COD 4 fights. And if I had a dollar for every “suck my $#!#”, “No you suck my &^#$” round of witty repartee, I would be able to buy Sony and implement this feature myself. So please, all you little pre-pubescents who think you can talk smack by simply repeating whatever you heard in some hip hop tune or on an episode of The Wire, grow up and learn just how foolish you sound. Oh yeah, and please buy a headset that costs more than a cup of coffee, most of em have the audio quality of a stuck pig.

  3. I’d like to have a palate of pre-recorded team commands, global taunts/insults, and whatever else might be routinely said in game. Because not all the time I have the microphone headset, and would like to just trigger a common verbal response, of my own voice, or even some pre-recorded pack of samples from other people. This would be nice for warhawk, or any other team/squad kinda game. I’d just record my own voice, and save to the disk as game data. IF I don’t have headset, no problemo!

I’d like to have the ability to stream music from internet radio dirrectly to my ps3. I love my mp3 collection, but internet radio is best.

I’d like to have my mp3’s play in my games, like the old tony hawk games used to allow.

I’d like to have the XMB have some kind of password protected prompt when it returns from screen-saver, to keep people out of my profile.

Some kind of VNC, or RDP client to connect to remote computers.

The ability to connect an ipod, or any other music device, and have it synchronize with the ps3 music collection. For that matter a port of itunes for ps3 would kill the xbox.

Better java support for the browser, and fix the anoying issues with the right stick zoom feature warping in on the cursor too much.

Animated gif, and/or png support for the custom themes we create. OR at the very least on-hover trigers to switch the image on focus.

the ability to turn the ps3 itself into a upnp DLNA media server, instead of just the client. We store media on the ps3, heck… some of us have 300Gb drives on our custom ps3. Let us stream the video, music, or pictures to other device on our home networks.

And finally, my last wish for future firmware. Please, or please update the game-os hyper-visor to abstract RSX functions, so that Linux my exploit hardware graphics.

    Thanks,
    jon

  4. I too would like the addition of internet radio streaming. Like was stated above, mp3’s are great, but nothing beats streaming music or video to listen or watch.

  5. everything that everyone said is good and should be done, but they should also put the time on the menu, sometimes you need to know the time and the ps3 does not show it i would be better if you press the PS button and make it appear

  6. I just want to know what’s up with Home?… In game XMB for summer? at this pace Home will be on the PS3 for 2009… Oh.. and I’d like to have connections with at least one of the most used messengers.. so like that you can send msgs from a PC to someone on his Ps3… come on, we have to go beyond our competition (if we can call’em that”) set up a messenger connection on the ps3 website at least… anyway.. sucking up a little, Good job guys on the development team (need an extra hand to get things done faster).. PEACE!
