HD DVD vs Blu-Ray Battle Ensues but no clear winner yet

There seems to be no momentum for either the Blu-ray or HD-DVD camp. Reminiscent of VHS and Betamax war in the 80s, Blu-ray and HD-DVD is squaring off for the supremacy for the next generation format. Sony, spearheading the Blu-ray format, is attempting to grab the momentum with the release of its PS3 system. PS3 natively supports Blu-ray discs out of the box. Most of the movie studios are camped behind Blu-ray format whereas HD-DVD enjoys support from Toshiba, Universal Studios, and Microsoft. You can currently get HD-DVD drive for Xbox 360 for around $200.

With no signs of winner emerging at this moment, movie studios are hesitant to commit to either format exclusively. Instead, Warner Bros. have developed two sided disc that can hold HD-DVD and Blu-ray format on one disc. The electronic manufacturers are due to release players that will support both formats in near future. Even with the compromises, experts predict that consumers are hesitant of dual format existence. Experts believe that one player has to win out in order for the industry to prosper.

There will be several factors that will influence the format war. First, market penetration of the players will play major role in picking the winner. By the midway of VHS vs. Betamax war, VHS achieved market penetration of 75% compared to that of 25% for Betamax. The key to market penetration will be bringing affordable players to the masses. . Blu-ray should have leg up on HD-DVD with the built in market of PS3 owners. Second, the price point of around $299 should sway the public to support one format over another. Currently HD-DVD players cost about $500 compared to $1000 for Blu-ray players. Lastly, the support from movie studios should help decide the winner. Currently, Blu-ray enjoys support from more movie studios. Only one studio is backing HD-DVD format at this time.
