A German game site, Cynamite, tested their new PAL PS3 for a backward compatibility test. As we all know by now, Sony neutered PAL PS3s by removing Emotion Engine to emulate PS2 games. Sony promptly announced that PS2 emulation will be handled by software instead of hardware. However, Sony promised constant updates to make PAL PS3 compatible with wide array of PS2 games.

With that in mind, Cynamite tested 12 popular PS2 titles. The titles include:

God of War
MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
MGS 3: Snake Eater
Shadow of the Colossus
Guitar Hero 2
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Okami
GTA: Liberty City Stories
Eragon
Final Fantasy X-2
Ratchet & Clank 3
Lumines Plus

So how many of these games worked on PS3? One. Eragon. Simply terrible. Out of all those great games, Eragon had to be one compatible game. That?s just rubbing it in. Now, keep in mind that the firmware version used by PS3 was 1.50. There will be new firmware update prior to European launch. I?m sure PAL region is thrilled to read this report.
