Firmware 3.0 Causing Controllers to Malfunction

PS3 White Control

Since its release earlier this week, Firmware 3.0 has become the new Marmite: some of us love it, some of us hate it.

The newest sore point, as noted on the official PlayStation 3 forum, relates to controller connectivity. Various models of Sony’s Sixth Axis wireless control pad – most notably the Ceramic White DualShock 3 CECHZC2H (pictured) – are failing to link to the PS3 post-update. LEDs for ports 1 & 2 will illuminate with promise, but the controller refuses to synchronise, even when attached via the USB cable in rare cases.

Resetting the controller, as suggested in troubleshooting section of the console’s instruction manual, doesn’t solve the problem, and performing a complete system restore (as carried out by one of the forum members) won’t work either. It may be an isolated issue at the moment, but this is becoming a concern amongst PS3 gamers.

So far, Firmware 3.0 has already affected the ability to download PlayStation Store content on the PS3 Slim, and is even causing select titles to freeze-up during play. We sincerely hope the firmware’s latest teething problem will be its last.

  1. Seems to me that 3.0 fixed an issue the slim was having with downloading content…just saying…

  2. @ Marc Grondin:
It did? The article connected to the link implies 3.0 caused the problem, but that might not have been the case universally.

Either way, the PS3 Slim’s download issue has been resolved now. It was only mentioned as context to this particular post.

But thank you for your comment, nonetheless.

  3. I had that problem to with my controllers(1 white and 2 blacks). But not that the controller won’t connect even with USB pluged in. But if it wokrs with the USB plugged in then just hold the PS button and press turn off controller then it should work to connect.

  4. I’m havong the same problem but with the BD remote control! WTF!?!?

    What should I do!?

  5. Nice to see Sony abusing its customers so they do their legal dirty work.

  6. I am having the same problem with linking my white ps3 controller up. Ports 1 and 2 come up but nothing is recognized. I connected it via usb and it still didn’t recognize it. Sony gonna do anything about that??

  7. my controller started acting funny after the firmware update…it would randomly disconnect from the console, but only if i was using the usb cable…i’m not sure if it’s the USB cable, my console or both of my controllers

  8. My controller the one that came with the system has acted up today. It turns the console on but the xmember menu icons are going berserk as if someone were pushing all the buttons on the controller all at once. This happened while using the browser.

  9. I am having the same problem if i have not used my ps3 for a day and then power it up from the controller it fails to connect to the controller just keeps flashing on all the port lights

  10. Just recently had problem turning on controller, 4 lights will constantly flash continuously and unable to sync. May work if plugged into PS3 (sometimes). If works, then I can disconnect the usb cable. Sometimes, bluetooth may lose connection as well.
