Firmware 2.42 Bricking Some PS3's, Solution

Tag: 2.42, Brick, Firmware, Firmware Updates, PS3, Update, Upgrade

The message boards over at Playstation.com are all fired up with people reporting that the latest Firmware upgrade, 2.42 has caused their PS3's to brick and stop reading all discs. Normally a certain number of machines will always die, coincidentally at the same time as a firmware upgrade. But in this case, enough people have had the same, pretty specific sequence of events and then an almost completely dead PS3.

To read the complaints, visit the Firmware 2.42 thread. And, to see a possible solution, visit here.

Please post a comment if this has happened to you and what your results have been with the admittedly painful fix listed above.

Yup. 80 GB Asia model.

Doesn't read some discs after the update esp. all the lionsgate BD discs.

Some discs play after repeatedly being popped into the console.

Sony, please fix this problem; its certainly your firmware. The problems started with 2.40; now its kinda acute.
