"F***ing boring": Stuart Black's thoughts on current FPSs

Black

I don’t know about you, but I love a good swear from time to time. I find first-person shooters in particular (Modern Warfare 2 being the main culprit) encourage expletives to gush from my mouth at a speed comparable to that of the gallons that cascade down Niagara Falls. Wow, what a picture that paints...

So when I read that Stuart Black, former Senior Designer for Criterion’s PS2 blockbuster Black, used the phrase “f***ing boring” to describe current shooters, I had to write about it.

The newly commissioned Game Director of Codemasters FPS-in-progress told OXM:

"There's a lot of cover-based shooters out at the moment [...] when a guy hunkers down behind something, you've just got to sit there and wait for him to pop his head up. Pops up, couple of bullets to his head, pops back down again... and I'm waiting for him to pop back up again? F***ing boring. I can't be bothered hanging around like that."

I get the impression that Mr Black intends to change this increasingly familiar trend in Codemasters’ future FPS. Watch this space.

You should be playing MAG! It defacates on MW2 and then some! MW2 players are an insult in this game actually lol (not kidding!) - it refers to run and gun players who doesn't utilize any communication or tactics.

CLAN UP though, make friends and play together. We're always enrolling new members in our clan for instance and we got over 100 as of yesterday and got as many as 20 online at a time and always have 2-8 in a group playing pretty much 24/7. Trust me, fighting 128 enemies takes massive teamwork, persistence and sometimes patience and if you get bored, you need medication man!

What MAG lacks in graphic details (trees & shrubs up close, etc), it completely makes up in overall grand scale, smoothest gameplay of ANY multiplayer I've every played (and I've played them ALL!) and the way its setup to be group and clan based.. This game rocks and has a fast growing cult following - get on the bandwagon or else b*tches!

Couple of my favorite features..

1) Proximity chat (nothing like insulting the enemy while teabagging their incapacitated bodies!)

2) [See #1] MUST HAVE A MIC!!! Those that communicate, WIN!

2) Teamwork, Teamwork, Teamwork [See #2] - Playing as a team is KEY to winning! No more MW2 run and gun only crap, granted there is run and gun moments and sure thoe can be fun too - but those that talk and work together always win, we tell each other where they are coming in, we spread our efforts and help other teams near us, warn our snipers when a sneaky pete with his trusty blade comes flanking them, etc. :)

3) NO LAG! Very very rare for the game to lag, even in 256 player games. yes, the game you're playing now sucks and you didn't even know it!

4) Just the grand scale of the battlefield. [Also see #3] You only see half of it in even the smallest of games (except maybe in 32 player maps)

My most wished for items for MAG are.

1) More maps, more maps, more maps. If you round robin all the different game types, its not so bad, but if you're like me and stay with the one you're good at (sabatage) Then the same 3 maps over and over gets old (1 defend, 2 attacking) - Suppression is worse with only 1 map (because its a practice map for playing againsts your own PMC - basically team deathmatch)

2) More clan abilities and a few changes and tweaks. (You can find many of my requests on their forum so I wont list them here) Dont get me wrong, just HAVING clan abilities in a console game, is GREAT and very rare (not talking CLAN TAG, shit they all got that!) But actual clan member management. Its great as it is, but it can still be so much more and I hope a future patch will add these features and changes :)

Not sure about codemasters though, I only play AAA titles and a few downloadable games and I got to say, the few codemaster games I've played have been sort of cookie cutter and unpolished, but that being said, I always wish everyone the best and look very forward to seeing something great from them, hopefully something grand, polished and on ps3 platform :) Most importantly though, they have to SUPPORT the product, for a couple years, with ever streaming patchs, bug fixes, changes and of course the ever loved free and paid DLC products :)
