Failure rate for PS3 system is less than 1%, Xbox 360 33%
Retailers estimate that one in every three Microsoft Xbox 360’s sold fails leaving frustrated owners staring at the red ring of death, or worst a black screen that reads “disc unreadable”. When compared to other systems, former EB games associate Matthiew G said…
“Failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for EB to consider revising their policies. Most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3.”
Not to be left out of the conversation, when another EB Games manager was asked if the store warranty was “worth the price”, he mentioned that the Nintendo Wii, with hundreds of units sold at their location has had ZERO come back as defective. We can hear Nintendo executives patting themselves on the back right now, no wait that’s just thunder.
A Best Buy associate who chose to remain anonymous claimed that the failure rate of the Microsoft Xbox 360 was in the ballpark of “between a quarter to a third” of the systems sold.
That said the Xbox 360 is the most successful console of the next gen bunch worldwide and has the largest market saturation to date with an impressive list of exclusive titles. Simple mathematics tells us that the more there are out there the more of a chance that some will fail, but 33% is still very high.
Microsoft stands behind their estimate that the Xbox 360 failure rate is within three to five percent, which they believe is well within the industry standard and in 2006 increased their warranty from 90 days up to 1 year. While they stand behind their estimate, it unfortunately does not seem to be accurate according to retailers of the product.

I have a ps3 and my girlfriend has a xbox 360. So there is alot of confict about which one is better. the ps3 has only freezes every once and a while and the xbox had to be sent in twice. the xbox freezes and lags out on a regular basis. The only thing about the ps3 is you have to use a disc for Netflix and the web browser isn't the greatest, but it's a game system not a computer. Xbox has alot of equipment you have to buy that the ps3 already has built in. Like a wireless router, battery packs, blu ray player, and online service.
I have to say, I've supported Microsoft from close to their beginning but, now I've seen the light. From OS's to game systems there have always been problems. "First to ship, first to profit" is their motto. Well no longer for me friends, I'm going Mac and Sony
.
for starters let me ask you this...you say there are more xbox's out there so its no doubt more will fail, BUT how many xbox owners bought new xbox's due to failures? You also comment on their exclusives...well they have what? Halo 3, gears of war...and? Ps3s are used as widely as xbox's and have been tested just like the xbox and it still isn't failing like the xbox.. So I can only assume your defending it means your a xbox fan and that is the true reason for this post...due to the fact ps3 exclusives are just as good if not better...due to the fact if you look at our exclusives coming for the ps3 no 360 game has the hype ALL our up and comers do.
I have to agree with this. I can't help but wonder how much broken consoles have skewed the Xbox 360's sales figures and made them higher than they would be if the 360 was a stable system, due to customers simply replacing their consoles entirely.
Personally, I had PS1 and PS2 growing up, both still work great to this day, never had to send either in for repairs. Had the PS1 since 2000 and it's been through at least 4 or 5 house moves, and had taken abuse from kids, still works great.
On the other hand I purchased an Xbox 360 for myself a few years ago, took good care of it and I still ended up on my 3rd console (and several faulty peripherals later) before finally selling it on Craiglist and buying a PS3. Microsoft makes junky hardware.
