Devil May Cry 4 “Burger” Review
Ahhh Devil May Cry, how you puzzle me so.
If Devil May Cry 3 is just a straightforward MacDonalds burger, then Devil May Cry 4 is the gaming equivalent of the MacDonalds Big Tasty burger.
Please, let me elaborate on this weak metaphor. Devil May Cry 4 is bigger, better and ..er..tastier than Devil May Cry 3. It does what it’s predecessor does in a more accomplished way, and does away with some of the annoying bits like the gherkins and small burger (gherkins = not being allowed to change your skill choices, tiny burger = insane difficulty ).
Unfortunately, that’s all it does. There’s some tasty HD mayonnaise in there, but aside from that there are no surprises. If you don’t like a standard burger you aren’t going to like the Big Tasty, and the Big Tasty generally looks a lot better from a distance than it does up close. When you finish the Big Tasty you’ll think “hmm, that was OK, but I can leave it another few years until my next one, and I hope they’ve done a bit more with it by then..that was ever so slightly..disappointing”. And finally, when you come down to it, this is complete unsophisticated crap we’re shovelling down, but it often hits the right spot for inexplicable reasons.
Ultimately, there are some “big” MacDonalds fans out there, otherwise the company wouldn’t exist, and the same goes for Devil May Cry 4 and Capcom. I’m a massive DMC fan, I even played through the rubbish DMC2 - but ironically people like me are the ones who will take the most enjoyment from it, whilst also feeling the most let down. Those amazing moments are there where you clear a room of 20 enemies in one long combo, whilst looking awesome - these are the moments that have carried DMC through the years — but the rooms are the same but slightly sharper, the enemies are essentially the same but with more polygons, and the fighting is more accessible, but also feels a little dumbed down. It’s great in many ways, but should’ve been greater.
So, to pick up my rubbish metaphor one last time — the burger will do for now, but we deserve better, and there’s steak on the horizon my friends.
