At the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), Sony will be unveiling their latest creation – the 45nm Cell Chip. It uses 45% less power than the 65nm chip, and it’s also very small. Obviously.

According to “reliable sources” at Arstechnica.com, the reason for the removal of the 80GB PS3 is to make way for units with larger hard drives.
It’s also predicted that this new model will come packaged with a Dual Shock 3 controller, presumably to convince more people to pick it up.

Sony has developed a smaller (and therefore cheaper) Blu-Ray laser, which if they decide to put into new PS3s, would significantly cut the production cost. This means that Sony would start making money on 40gb PS3s, and could also lead to price cuts on the PS3.
